The New York State Senate today will act on 23 bills to address issues surrounding the increase in heroin and opioid abuse, addiction, and related crimes in New York. The bills are part of a comprehensive legislative package proposed by the bipartisan New York State Senate Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction in a report released in May.

SENATOR LANZA ANNOUNCES NEARLY 100K JOBS AVAILABLE NOW ON JOBS EXPRESS

Senator Andrew Lanza today announced that more than 96,000 jobs are currently available and listed on the State’s Jobs Express website (www.jobs.ny.gov). The site sorts thousands of jobs by region and occupation, and also allows users to search jobs based on zip code and travel distance.

New businesses and job listings are added every day. Throughout the month of April 2014, there were more than 73,000 new job openings listed on Jobs Express – a 22 percent increase from April 2013 – and more than 78,000 unique website visitors. More than 7,100 businesses posted a new job order on the site in April 2014. Businesses using the site fulfilled nearly 55,000 job orders in April 2014.

The New York State Senate today honored World War II veterans today by adopting  a resolution that commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Allied Army invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, a defining day in world history that marked the beginning of the liberation of Europe and the eventual end of World War II; as well as passing a package of legislation to benefit veterans, and men and women in active military duty.

JOINT SENATE TASK FORCE ON HEROIN AND OPIOID ADDICTION - LEGISLATIVE REPORT

After conducting 18 public forums across the state, listening to 53 hours of testimony and speaking with more than 2,000 residents about the tragedy of the state’s heroin and opioid epidemic, the Senate’s bipartisan Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction has just issued a special report, entitled: Solutions to New York's Heroin Epidemic. The report makes legislative recommendations to help address the drug abuse, addiction and drug related crimes in New York that have been claiming lives and destroying families in communities throughout the state.

'Scared Straight' Forum on Drug Awareness

This Thursday, a drug awareness forum entitled, “Scared Straight” will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea School, located at 5411 Amboy Rd., from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

The  program is open to the public, but is geared primaarily to youth and young adults ages 12 and up.

Parents and caregivers are also invited.

The New York State Senate Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction today released a report summarizing the findings of statewide forums held to examine the issues surrounding the increase in drug abuse, addiction and drug related crimes in New York. The report includes a comprehensive package of bills recommended for action this legislative session that target prevention, treatment, and enforcement issues raised during extensive testimony provided by dozens of experts, parents, and concerned New Yorkers.

SENATORS DIANE SAVINO AND ANDREW LANZA HONOR TWO STATEN ISLAND VETERANS WITH NEW YORK SENATE VETERANS' HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

Albany, NY- Staten Island Senators Diane J. Savino (DIW-North Shore) Andrew Lanza (RC Mid-Island and South Shore) honored two veterans today with their induction to the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame. Senator Andrew Lanza posthumously nominated Army Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis to the NY Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame. At the early age of 24, Ollis bravely gave his life saving another soldier. The award was received by his parents, Linda and Bob.Senator Diane J. Savino nominated long time Veteran advocate and Vietnam nurse Mary LaManna to the NY Senate Veteran Hall of Fame.  Mary was joined by the love of her life, Dennis McLoone, also a Vietnam veteran and family.

Michael H. Ollis

From the time he was a young boy, Michael H. Ollis wanted to be a soldier, just like his father and grandfathers before him. Michael played “army” in his backyard, joined the Air Force ROTC in high school, and following graduation from Staten Island’s Petrides High School, enlisted into the armed services at age 17.
