Talk Of Trash Tax Already Causing A Stink

The Bloomberg administration is considering making New Yorkers pay for garbage pickup as a way to help solve the city's financial crisis.

Proponents of the idea say it would also cut down on waste.

A former sanitation official says many New Yorkers could end up paying less overall taxes if trash collection is separated from general taxes, and people are charged for what they throw away, not their neighbors.

Paying for trash pickup is widely practiced elsewhere.

As I go around Staten Island, people tell me that they are frustrated and concerned. I am too. I’ve talked to so many families that are worried about the future – they want more job security, a good education and opportunities for their children. We are fortunate to live in a great community with good schools and many great local businesses that, unfortunately, are now struggling.

SENATOR ANDREW LANZA OPPOSES SCHOOL BUS SERVICE CUTS FOR 7TH AND 8TH GRADE STUDENTS

Senator Lanza is outraged by the city's decision to eliminate yellow school bus service to seventh and eighth grade students. This plan would cut service to nearly 3,000 students that live on Staten Island, attending 11 public schools and 36 private and Catholic schools.

Lester Modelowitz

Lester Modelowitz was born in Brooklyn, New York. In August 1966, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina for Basic Training. Following Basic Training, he was sent to Fort Lee, Virginia for Advanced Individual Training. In February 1967, he was deployed to Vietnam and was assigned to the 1st Aviation Brigade 162nd Assault Helicopter Company in Phouc Vinh. In May 1967, Modelowitz was reassigned to the 2nd Battalion 94th Artillery in Dong Ha and Camp JJ Carroll in I Corp.
