SENATE PASSES PACKAGE OF SEX CRIMES BILLS - Legislation would keep children safer, increase penalties for criminals


The New York State Senate today passed a series of bills increasing penalties for people convicted of sex crimes against children.

The Senate passed legislation (S1541A), cosponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza, that would increase criminal penalties for sexual contact between a child and a person in a position of trust, which includes any adult responsible for supervision of children when they are not with their parents.

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) announced that in observance of Presidents’ Day, there will be no garbage or recycling collection, or street cleaning on Monday, February 20, 2012. In addition, all Sanitation Department administrative offices will be closed on Monday, February 20th, in observance of the holiday.

SENATOR LANZA VOTES IN FAVOR OF DNA DATABANK EXPANSION BILL - Largest Expansion of State’s DNA Databank Since its Creation in 1994


The New York State Senate today passed legislation, cosponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza, for the largest expansion of the state’s DNA databank since it was created in 1994. The legislation mirrors the databank expansion plan proposed by Governor Cuomo in his Executive Budget to require people convicted of all felonies, as well as all misdemeanors in the penal law to submit DNA samples.

TRAFFIC ALERT: New Traffic Pattern Before VN Bklyn-bound toll plaza begins Saturday

On Saturday, Jan. 28th between 12:01 a.m. and 7 a.m. three out of four lanes of traffic on the Staten Island Expressway will be closed from the Fingerboard Bridge overpass to the Verrazano-Narrows Brooklyn-bound toll plaza while a new traffic pattern is put in place.

SENATOR ANDREW LANZA VOTES TO TOUGHEN LAWS FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

The New York State Senate passed legislation this week that creates new penalties for individuals supervising another driver while also under the influence of drugs or alcohol, also known as Abbagail’s Law (S.164C).   The bill, cosponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza, is named after eight-year-old Abbagail Buzard, who died in a car accident caused by an inexperienced driver who was supervised by a parent under the influence of alcohol.

Brief Detour for Manhattan and Brooklyn-bound Drivers Exiting Verrazano-Narrows Bridge from 11 PM to 7 AM, Sat., Dec. 10th into Sun., Dec.11th. Motorists driving into Manhattan or Brooklyn using the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge will be diverted to the 92nd Street exit ramp while a portion of the Gowanus Expressway just off the bridge is closed for the removal of an electronic sign beginning Sat., Dec. 10th at 11 p.m. through Sun., Dec. 11th at 7 a.m. All traffic exiting the bridge will be diverted to the 92nd Street exit.
