BUY A SOLDIER DINNER

The U.S. Army’s 436 TC Battalion’s Family Readiness Group is planning its next Family Day for Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Bloomfield.

A number of soldiers from the battalion have recently returned from serving overseas or will soon be deployed, and the event will present an opportunity for them to spend an enjoyable, much-deserved day with their families.

The organization’s goal is to ensure that no soldier pay for the event. The cost of the dinner is $20 per person.

FEMA Extends New York Deadlines to Register for Disaster Assistance

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has extended the registration deadline for anyone who suffered damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee this summer.

Those affected by either storm now have until

Dec. 15 to register for federal disaster assistance.

Senator Andrew Lanza is hosting a book drive to benefit Public School 3 on Staten Island. The book drive begins Tuesday, Nov. 1st and continues until Thursday, Dec. 15th. The drive will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at Senator Lanza’s Elltingville office located at 3845 Richmond Ave. Residents are encouraged to donate new or used children’s books, appropriate for students in grades K-5, to benefit P.S. 3’s library.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Staten Island officials are keeping up the fight for a resident discount on the borough's Port Authority bridges in the face of steep toll increases that have recession-weary drivers feeling the pinch.

And one, Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn), is taking the battle against the tolls to court.

Grimm is set to submit an amicus (friend of the court) brief in support of the Automobile Club of America's (AAA) lawsuit against the hikes, filed yesterday.
