Tribute To La Guarachera De Cuba | The Queen Celia Cruz

Senator Bill Perkins recently presented a proclamation honoring the life, memory and everlasting legacy of The Queen, Celia Cruz—on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of her debut performance at the Apollo Theater in May of 1964. The event, entitled “Tribute To La Guarachera De Cuba | The Queen Celia Cruz” was hosted by the Apollo Theater in partnership with the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, in collaboration with the Celia Cruz Legacy Project.

We are all black men, who because of demonizing stereotypes, are subject to the irrational hysterical response of people who maintain that we are intimidating and frightening. Last Friday Senator Perkins attended the wedding of his friends and constituents Lawrance Rodrigues and Frederick Bramfield who live in Harlem.  The well attended ceremony was held at Mr. Rodrigues' art gallery, Casa Frela. " This  is a great occasion for me," Senator Perkins told the couple, who had waited 25 years for the opportunity to marry.  "Sponsoring New York's Marriage Equality Bill, I hoped to give everyone the same benefits under the law. Lawrance and Fred's was the first LGBT wedding I've attended since our bill passed in June, but I'm looking forward to attending many, many more."
