Unflappable Schools Chancellor Joel Klein skillfully fended off a firestorm of criticism yesterday from Democratic state senators and other foes of mayoral control.

The hostile reception for Klein in a tense Senate committee hearing sent a clear signal that the battle over the school-governance law was near the boiling point. The seven-year-old law expires June 30.

Senator Bill Perkins’ college-bound Saturday morning

This past Saturday morning (November 21, 2009), often a time to sleep late, watch TV or go shopping, the doors of Central Harlem’s Wadleigh High School for Visual and Performing Arts were open for parents and students who heard the call to attend an educational forum entitled “How to Send Your Child to College.” The event was sponsored by State Senator Bill Perkins.

Perkins Holds Eminent Domain Hearing

On December 17, 2009 the New York Amsterdam News reported that Senator Bill Perkins applauded the appellate court decision that rejected the use of eminent domain in regard to the Columbia University’s west side expansion plans.  Additionally, Senator Perkins sent a letter to Governor David Paterson requesting that he place a moratorium on eminent domain, pending legislative action, and not to appeal the court’s decision.
