CITY TO PROVIDE FIX FOR MISSING RUSSIAN VOTER INFO, SENATOR KRUGER SAYS

             Instructions on how to use the new polling machines are currently lost in translation to Russian-speaking voters, but Senator Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn) said a fix is soon on the way.             Sen. Kruger, Chair of the Finance Committee and sponsor of the state law requiring New York City and other large municipalities to translate voting materials into Russian, wrote to the Board of Elections last week when he learned that the board’s website fails to include either written or audio instructions for Russian-speaking voters on how to use the new machines.

SEN. KRUGER GETS THE ‘LOWE’-DOWN ON TRAFFIC CONTROL PLAN

            A week after he called traffic outside the new Lowe’s in Mill Basin “an accident waiting to happen,” Senator Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn) met on-site Wednesday with Department of Transportation Brooklyn Commissioner Joseph Palmieri, 63rd Precinct executive officer Capt. Patricia McDonald and a Lowe’s representative to discuss traffic control measures at the store’s new site.

SENATOR KRUGER SEEKS VICTIMS OF MYSTERY SHOPPING SCAM

            Senator Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn), Chair of the Finance Committee, is seeking additional victims of a mystery shopping scam after a constituent sought his help with a lucrative job offer that went bust.             The constituent had applied online to be a mystery shopper. While there are many legitimate mystery shopping opportunities, there are many others that aren’t, according to Sen. Kruger. Shady mystery shopping outfits will use ads and unsolicited emails to tempt respondents with a lucrative living by dining at elegant restaurants, shopping at pricey stores or checking into luxurious hotels and then writing about the quality of service.

SENATOR KRUGER TO SEEK STATE BAN ON USE OF THERMAL PAPER WITH BPA

             As Gov. Paterson signed into law Friday a measure prohibiting the manufacture, distribution and sale of child care products containing the controversial chemical bisphenol-A, Senator Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn), Chair of the Finance Committee, said he plans to seek the law’s expansion to include another widespread source of BPA: thermal paper receipts.

             If the measure passes, New York would become the first state in the country to institute this ban.

NEW YORK STATE SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION HONORS SENATOR CARL KRUGER

            At a dinner Sunday night in Albany, Senator Carl Kruger was awarded the prestigious “Legislative of the Year” honor from by the New York State School Boards Association.            Senator Kruger, Chair of the Finance Committee, was recognized for his advocacy in stopping the mid-year school aid cuts proposed by Governor Paterson and for his longtime work on school governance issues.

SENATOR KRUGER AND FINANCE COMMITTEE BEGIN HISTORIC SERIES OF LOCAL HEARINGS ON DEFICIT REDUCTION PLAN

             The Senate Finance Committee chaired by Senator Carl Kruger (D-Brooklyn) today launched an historic series of public hearings to solicit testimony on the Governor’s proposed deficit reduction plan (DRP) for fiscal year 2009-10, marking “the first time in New York’s history that Albany legislators have taken the budget process out of the Capitol to the heart of local communities,” Sen. Kruger said.
