SENATE PASSES LEGISLATION TO STRENGTHEN LAW ON TEXT MESSAGING WHILE DRIVING

 

New Law Would Elevate Text Messaging While Driving Violation to a Primary Offense Assembly Also Expected To Act Today

The New York State Senate today passed a bill (S.5643) that will make it easier for law enforcement to crack down on texting-while-driving offenses and prevent tragic accidents caused by drivers distracted by texting. The bill represents an agreement with the State Assembly which is also expected to act on the legislation today.

The bill is sponsored by Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R-Syosset), Senator Jim Alesi (R-C-I, Perinton), and Senator Joseph Robach (R-C-I, Rochester).

STATE BUDGET STATEMENT

The 2011-12 New York State Budget is complete.  The good news is that this year’s plan was negotiated in public, is on time and most importantly contains not a single new tax.  It reduced year to year State spending by over $3 billion. The bad news is there are many painful cuts, necessary, but painful.

Marcellino to Chair the Senate Committee on Investigations and Government

           State Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R-Syosset) announced today that he has been appointed chairman of the Senate Committee on Investigations and Government Operations.             The Committee on Investigations and Government Operations serves as the Senate’s primary legislative and governmental oversight committee and, among other responsibilities, is specifically charged with reviewing New York’s tax and regulatory policies, economic development strategies, and many government reform initiatives.

Cutting spending, cutting taxes, lowering property taxes, reducing the size of government and helping businesses create new private sector jobs must be the priorities.  If we can accomplish these goals, we will put New York on a path of financial recovery and restore the public’s faith in our State government.
