Many local and state parks are located right in our backyard and offer countless opportunities to appreciate our natural environment, escape from the grind of the everyday, and experience new adventures. Lakeshore beaches, boat launches, historic sites, hiking trails, and campsites await.

Some nearby state parks that offer wonderful opportunities to celebrate the great outdoors include:

Honor Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice this Memorial Day

Memorial Day may be a time when we enjoy a long weekend, relax with the family, and kick off the summer, but we must always remember that those freedoms have been fought for and defended by countless veterans, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice.

Without them, without their selfless dedication, none of what we are so fortunate to have in America would be possible.

So this weekend, I encourage you to attend a local parade or memorial event.

Working Together to Lower Your Taxes

Families, seniors, and young people face major challenges these days in balancing their household budgets, and New York’s high taxes certainly don’t make that task any easier.

With this in mind, my Senate colleagues and I are working together to give everyone the opportunity to succeed by reducing property taxes and providing real relief to local communities.

A Budget that Works for Seniors

New York’s seniors have spent their lives raising their families, enriching our communities, and working to power our state’s economy. At the same time, they were saving for retirement and preparing for their golden years. Now, because of burdensome taxes and high costs of living, many retirees and seniors on fixed incomes are having difficulty remaining in their homes in New York after they’ve retired.

New State Budget: Rebuilding Our Roads, Highways, and Bridges

You can look forward to a smoother ride thanks to record funding for local road repairs included in the state budget.

The poor condition of many of our roads and highways is a serious economic issue, as well as a safety matter. The potholes caused by this winter’s extreme weather are causing vehicle damage and putting drivers’ safety at risk. The strength and vitality of our economy is also directly linked to the quality of our roads and highways.

Save Elmira Psychiatric Center!

As you may know, Governor Cuomo has announced plans to shut down inpatient services and diminish the overall role of the Elmira Psychiatric Center beginning next year.

In July, the Governor announced a planned statewide reorganization of the State Office of Mental Health (OMH). The plan called for shutting down nine psychiatric hospitals throughout New York next year, including the Elmira Psychiatric Center, which will be merged into a regional center in Buffalo.

The Elmira Psychiatric Center is an important regional asset, serving the entire Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, and Western New York. It has a strong record of being one of the State's most efficient, innovative, high quality, cost effective, and successful providers of mental health services. It is an irreplaceable center that has been a source for accessible, compassionate care for patients, and a first responder providing treatment for those in need.

I am joining with other local leaders, Elmira Psychiatric Center administrators and staff, patients and their families, and other concerned citizens to rally public support for saving the Center.
