New York Soldiers Serving in Kuwait

Three hundred soldiers from the New York Army National Guard's 642nd Aviation Support Battalion, which includes soldiers from the armories in Dunkirk and Olean, were deployed to Kuwait in December.

The New York National Guard recently posted photos of our honorable service men and women during a helicopter refueling operation. Among those pictured doing us proud is Sgt. Nicolaw Smith of Olean.

The New Battlefield: Armyworms Damaging Crops, Disaster Relief Available

State Sen. Cathy Young (R-Olean) and County Executive Greg Edwards gathered alongside Bruce Kidder on his farm in Jamestown Friday to discuss what action needs to be taken against the armyworm.

The armyworm is a species which is native to the southern parts of the United States. Occasionally, during the growing season, the armyworm will make its way into the northern states, however it does not overwinter here.

It was the Army calling. “Mrs. Rethmel,” they asked the 20-year-old Olean native. “Have you heard from your husband?” Spec. Brandon Rethmel, 22, had been severely injured in a mortar attack on his base in Afghanistan, just two weeks after being deployed. Sylvia Rethmel would later learn that her husband — and father of their year-old daughter Mariah — had been on duty on a guard tower when it was hit by a mortar.
