Community Arts Mosaic

Senator Young stands with Heather Carroll (left) of Americorps and Gilda Oliver (right) during St. Bonaventure University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts' unveiling of the Community Art Mosaic exhibit on February 24, 2012.

The mosaic was created during the Summer 2011 by nearly 200 area residents at the Cattaraugus County Arts Council under the direction of Ms. Oliver, an acclaimed clay artist and arts instructor.

Town of Freedom Celebrates 200th Anniversary

At the December Town Board meeting for the Town of Freedom, Senator Catharine Young presented an official state Senate Resolution that commemorates the 200th Anniversary of the Town to Town Supervisor Barbara George. Although not officially recognized as a Town until 1820 by decree of the State Legislature, the first residents of Freedom came in December of 1811. The Town held a Bicentennial Celebration back in August that included opening of a time capsule, a parade, and fireworks.

Sinclairville 76ers

Senator Catharine Young joined federal and county officials at a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate renovations made to the Sinclairville Firehall and Senior Center. The “Sinclairville 76ers” provide hot meals to 177 seniors at the Center, and deliver thousands of meals annually to homebound frail elderly. A $310,297 federal grant that was awarded through the state Housing Trust Fund brought the facility into compliance with the state building code. Nutrition Services such as those at the Sinclairville Center are the largest program administered by the state Office for the Aging. Locally, many dedicated individuals deliver services.

Leadership Allegany Graduating Class of 2012

Leadership Allegany, an initiative that works to create civic leaders, honored its second graduating class during a dinner at Moonwink’s Restaurant in Cuba, NY on Friday, February 18. Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – 57th District) presented the keynote speech, recognizing the graduates, local organizations and program supporters. The Leadership Allegany Graduating Class of 2012 includes (front row left to right): Darlene Roloson, Andrea Mott-Hollamby, Trina LaFleur, Gina Kocsis, Norma Kerling and Pam Witter, director of development at Houghton College and Leadership Allegany coordinator.

Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department 2.11.12

Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – 57th District) recognized Pete Dawson (left) for his 50 years of service to the Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department at the department’s annual banquet on February 11. Mr. Dawson is a past chief of the department and currently serves as the department's Fire Chaplain. His wife, Linda Dawson (right), attended the event, which was held at the Lakewood Fire Department Training Grounds. Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department is one 42 fire departments serving Chautauqua County.

Legislative Luncheon, Belmont, NY 2.10.12

Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – 57th District) visited with Jean Switalski, a member of the Senior Foundation and the Allegany County Office for the Aging (OFA) Advisory Council during a Legislative Luncheon at the Belmont American Legion on February 10. The OFA provides various cost-saving services to Allegany County seniors, which include five Meals-On-Wheels meals visits, four hours of in-home services, a Lifeline emergency unit and half an hour of case management a week.

During Allegany Engine Company’s annual dinner dance on Saturday, January 14, Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – 57th District) commended Allegany Fire Department President Jim Wilson (center) and Allegany Fire Department Chief Rick Stady (right) for the service provided by the department, particularly in incidents on Union Street on September 22, 2011 and on Mediterranean Avenue on October 30, 2011. Senator Young also honored the Village of Allegany’s Department of Public Works Crew for its assistance in the incident on Union Street. Members of the Fire Department recognized Senator Young for her outstanding commitment to the Allegany Fire Department and Allegany Rescue/EMS.

Olean Theatre Workshop Celebrates 20 Years

Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I - 57th District) presented Lesley Patrone (left) and Nick Patrone (right) with a special Proclamation honoring the Olean Theatre Workshop during the organization’s 20th anniversary celebration on Friday, January 20. Since opening in 1992, the Olean Theatre Workshop has served as a classroom for more than 1,600 students who want to learn theater. Throughout its 20 years, Olean Theatre Workshop presented over 125 productions, and young people continue to line up for the area’s longest-running theater education program. The theater also offers community poetry readings, films and ensemble plays.

Buffalo Bills Hall of Famer and former NFL MVP running back Thurman Thomas visits the Capitol

Senator Cathy Young (right) and Senator Joe Robach (left) greet Buffalo Bills Hall of Famer and former NFL MVP running back Thurman Thomas during his visit to the Capitol on Monday, January 30. Mr. Thomas has been involved with many worthwhile charitable endeavors over the years, including former Bills' star quarterback Jim Kelly's Celebrity Auction that he held to raise funds for children with disabilities served by The ReHabilitation Center when the Bills held their training camp at St. Bonaventure University. Senator Young, who worked with Jim Kelly on the auction, thanked Mr. Thomas for his generosity and kindness.

Senator Young Tours Progress of New Sewer System in Town of Olean

 Senator Young gets a tour of the progress being made in the Town of Olean where a new sewer system is being installed that will benefit 28 homes still using aging septic systems. Funding for the project was made possible by a $600,000 Small Cities Community Development Block Grant administered by NYS Homes and Community Renewal.... Senator Young Cuts Ribbon for New Prospect St. Bridge in Cuba

Senator Cathy Young helped to officially open the Prospect Street Bridge in Cuba at a recent ribbon cutting ceremony. The foot bridge, which runs over Norfolk-Southern Railroad, is part of the Genesee Valley Greenway project, a 90-mile trail of open space from Rochester to Cuba. Senator Young Joins in Ribbon Cutting for New 'Center Street Bridge'

Senator Catharine Young is joined by officials from the Seneca Nation and other local and state representatives at a recent ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony to mark the grand re-opening of the replaced bridge at Center Street and Front Avenue in Salamanca. The previously unnamed bridge, referred to as the “Center Street Bridge” was newly named after the famed Seneca statesman Chief Cornplanter.The new bridge includes areas for pedestrians, bicyclists and large vehicles.
