Senator Young Introduces Legislation to Increase Employment Opportunities for People with Developmental Disabilities

Senate Bill 6640 Supports Integrated Work Centers for Job Seekers with Developmental Disabilities

ALBANY - Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I - Olean) has introduced legislation that will help New Yorkers with developmental disabilities to keep their current jobs while also creating important employment opportunities for future job seekers.

Recent federal and state announcements have revealed that sheltered workshops employing individuals with developmental disabilities, as they now exist, will close. Senator Young’s bill provides a means for these sheltered workshops to transition into qualified employment centers that can continue to employ people with developmental disabilities, while also providing tax incentives to encourage additional employment.

Senator Young Secures Funding for Successful Manufacturing and Job Training Programs

$3 Million for the Workforce Development Institute Manufacturing Initiative

ALBANY - A $3 million grant secured by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) will help workers develop the job skills they need to be successful through the Workforce Development Institute (WDI).

The grant will support the creation of manufacturing jobs and support training programs that help workers to either improve their position or transition into other jobs after layoffs. This funding is dedicated specifically to manufacturing initiatives and is in addition to $4 million received by the WDI for all of the important work they do to promote employment initiatives across the state.

Chautauqua County Manufacturers Receive A Boost Through Workforce Development Institute

Funding will help Water Street Brass and Stuart Tool & Die improve operations

 

Two Chautauqua County manufacturers will see an increase in productivity and potential expansion of operations as a result of training assistance provided through the Workforce Development Institute (WDI), a program championed by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) in last year’s state budget. Water Street Brass Corporation, of Lakewood, and Stuart Tool & Die, of Falconer, were both recently approved by WDI to send employees to training that will help both manufacturers improve efficiency and operations.

Budget includes $1.5 billion for the Upstate Revitalization Program, $400 million for transformative investment programs, $500 million to support the expansion of broadband availability and $5 million for the Workforce Development Institute

 

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – Olean) announced today that communities across her region will have access to economic development funding included in this year’s state budget.

 

Among the positive investments included in the final budget were $1.5 billion for the Upstate Revitalization Initiative, $400 million for transformative investment programs, $500 million to support the statewide expansion of broadband access, and $5 million for the Workforce Development Institute.

Spherical Block Gets a Boost With Support From The Workforce Development Institute

Funding will promote business growth, likely create eight new jobs in the next three years

 

ALBANY – Spherical Block, LLC, an Allegany County manufacturer, expects to see job growth and expanded operations as a result of funding assistance provided through the Workforce Development Institute (WDI), a program championed by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean).

 

As part of the 2015-16 State Budget, Senator Young personally advocated for the restoration of funding that supports the mission of the Workforce Development Institute following Governor Cuomo’s proposal to eliminate the program. The enacted budget restored $5 million in funding for the program.
