Senators Young and Hannon Lead Effort to Help Rural Hospitals

ALBANY— Many of New York’s rural hospitals are in danger of closing unless policy changes are made to strengthen them, according to Senator Catharine Young (R, I, C—Olean), who recently led a roundtable discussion with experts from across upstate to brainstorm solutions.

The session was a joint endeavor between Senator Young, Chair of the Commission on Rural Resources, and Senator Kemp Hannon (R, C, I—Garden City), Chair of the Senate Health Committee.

Senate Passes Virtual Learning Bill

Bill creates online learning advisory committee to explore online and blended learning 

ALBANY— A bill passed in the Senate (S.5509-A), and sponsored by Senator Catharine Young (R, I, C—Olean),  would help rural school districts dramatically increase course offerings for students by taking steps toward the creation of a statewide online and blended learning program.

Online and blended learning initiatives, often referred to as virtual learning, provide schools with cost-effective opportunities to use technology to offer students access to courses otherwise not available.

Bountiful Apples

Celebrate fall by visiting New York orchards and farms 

ALBANY — With an especially plentiful crop this year, families and individuals in New York are celebrating autumn by enjoying the crisp bite of the state fruit – the apple.

“Last year’s fruit crops, including apples, were devastated by a combination of unseasonably warm spring weather that was followed by freezing temperatures,” said Senator Catharine Young (R, I, C—Olean), chair of the Legislative Commission on Rural Resources. “After facing such a difficult year in 2012, this year’s harvest demonstrates the resilience of our apple growers throughout the state.”

Senator Young Announces State Funding for Rail Upgrades in Livingston County

For Release: Immediate, September 30, 2013

Rail lines to receive $3,877,662 of grant funding for track rehabilitation and improvements

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) has announced that track rehabilitation and upgrade projects in Livingston County have received substantial grant funding from the New York State Passenger and Freight Rail Assistance Program totaling over $3.8 million.

A grant of $3,719,908 for Rochester and Southern Railroad, Inc. will provide for the rehabilitation of rail lines stretching from Caledonia to Dansville, allowing for faster track speeds and greater utilization.

Federal Farm Bill Will Provide Greater Stability for New York Farmers

Senator Young strongly supports passage of Farm Bill

ALBANY— With farms serving as the foundation of our nation’s food supply, it is encouraging to see progress being made toward the passage of a long awaited federal Farm Bill.
