Veterans Receive Awards for Service in Liberation of France

OLEAN – Nearly 70 years after the liberation of France, two Olean veterans have received awards from the French Republic for their part in the defeat of Nazi Germany.

During a ceremony at her office in Olean on Armed Forces Day, May 17, Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – Olean) joined Mr. Pascal Soares, Honorary French Consul of New York, in presenting medals to U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class John P. Capito and U.S. Army Staff Sgt. William Zuckerman in recognition of their outstanding service.

            The New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame was created in 2005 to honor those veterans who have distinguished themselves in their valiant military service and continue to devote themselves to serving their neighbors, communities, and country - criteria Captain Zamperini exemplifies.

U.S. Army Sgt. Stanley J. Grochowina Recognized for Outstanding Service

SALAMANCA - For his outstanding record of military service during the Cold War era and his contributions to the protection of the United States and its NATO allies, United States Army veteran Sgt. Stanley J. Grochowina was presented with honorary military medals and ribbons on Saturday.

During a special ceremony at the Salamanca Veterans Memorial Park, Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I - Olean) presented Sergeant Grochowina with the official awards conferred upon those honorees worthy of their distinction.


Woman of Distinction Dororthy Button Honored by State Senate

Ashford woman recognized for distinguished service and accomplishments 

OLEAN – A lifetime of service was recognized this weekend as Ashford’s Dorothy Button was honored and recognized for being a 2014 New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction.” Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) chose Mrs. Button as the 57th Senate District’s honoree because of her long and impressive record of accomplishments that include service in the U.S. Coast Guard, years of dedicated work on behalf of fellow veterans, and decades of volunteerism as a firefighter and EMT.

U.S. Navy Veteran Receives Awards Earned 70 Years Ago

            OLEAN - In recognition of his outstanding service during World War II, United States Navy veteran William H. Button was honored and presented with long overdue medals today.

            In a ceremony at the Pines in Olean, Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) presented Pharmacist’s Mate 3rd Class (PhM3c) Button with the military medals and awards he earned serving his country overseas seven decades ago.

Nearly 25 Years After His Passing Cattaraugus County Veteran Honored with Awards Earned in Service

MACHIAS - Family and friends gathered this afternoon to recognize the outstanding military service of U.S. Army veteran Robert Henry Fuller, who has finally received the military decorations he earned defending our country.

During a ceremony at the Glenn A. Pratt, Jr. American Legion Post No. 1460 in Machias, Senator Catharine Young (R,I,C-Olean) joined in presenting Private First Class Fuller’s family with the military medals he earned while serving overseas during World War II.

JAMESTOWN – Anthony “Tony” Costanzo, United States Army (Ret.), who courageously served as a member of the First Infantry Division known as the “Big Red One” in some of the first American battles in the North African and European Theaters during World War II, recently received his decoration as a member of France’s Légion d’honneu, or Legion of Honor.



Senator Young Discusses the Women's Equality Agenda, the Upcoming Budget Process and Shares the Story Of A Local Vet

On the latest edition of "Your Voice," Senator Young discusses the importance of the Women's Equality Agenda, the first package of legislation taken up in the 2015 Session by the Senate. The package passed with unanimous bipartisan support and included eight key components aimed at protecting, promoting and empowering the women of New York State. Among the provisions that passed the Senate was a bill sponsored by Senator Young to protect victims of domestic violence.


Senate Passes "Homes for Heroes" Program

Legislation will assist service-disabled veterans making necessary improvements to their homes


ALBANY - Today, the New York State Senate passed legislation (S.2316/A.3795) sponsored by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) that will assist veterans with physical challenges who need modifications to their homes in order to live independently.


The “Homes for Heroes” program will establish a fund to assist New York State’s veteran population so that they are able to live safely, comfortably and productively in the setting of their choice.
