Senator Young Presents Posthumous Medal to Local WWII Veteran

First Lieutenant Wicks was part of several combat missions and was a POW for many months

DANSVILLE – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- Olean) awarded four service medals today to the family of the late First Lieutenant Robert W. Wicks, who courageously fought during World War II. First Lieutenant Wicks’ family will be receiving the Prisoner of War Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. The ceremony took place at the Daniel Goho American Legion Post #87 in Dansville.

Senator Young Responds to Governor Cuomo's State of the State Address

Encouraged by Cuomo’s pledge to not raise taxes, promote business growth

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) said she was encouraged by Governor Cuomo’s State of the State address’ focus on restoring the Upstate economy by concentrating on job growth, workforce training, no new taxes, infrastructure investment and incentives for business.

“Not raising taxes or fees is critical to making our state more competitive so more jobs can be created. We need to get people back to work, create good-paying jobs to sustain our families, and have career opportunities for our young people so they can stay after they graduate,” she said.

Senator Young presents a proclamation to Mike & Kelly Rapan honoring Mike’s father William Rapan

Senator Young presents a proclamation to Mike & Kelly Rapan honoring Mike’s father William, recognizing his 46 years of service to the Bolivar Fire Department. Mr. Rapan passed away in November.

Mr. Rapan was an active member of the Bolivar Fire Department from September 1966 until his passing. During this time, he held many offices, including Foreman, Vice President and President of the Bolivar Fire Department.

Senator Young tours the Henrietta Campus of Bryant & Stratton College

Senator Young toured the Henrietta Campus of Bryant & Stratton College to learn about the educational programs provided by the College. The school in Rochester is one of eight in New York State with 18 total locations in New York, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. Bryant & Stratton’s Medical Assistant program is their largest followed by Criminal Justice.

Of particular interest was Bryant & Stratton’s "Jump Start" program, where the College partners with local BOCES to bring college credit courses to high school students. In Ellicottville, located in Senator Young’s district, Bryant & Stratton College offers a criminal justice course that gives students "transcriptable” credits upon completion.

Senator Young and Assemblyman Joe Giglio join Holiday Valley President Dennis Eshbaugh at the grand opening of the Holiday Valley Lodge in Ellicottville.

This past weekend, Senator Young joined Holiday Valley President Dennis Eshbaugh and Assemblyman Joe Giglio at an event marking the grand opening of the Holiday Valley Lodge in Ellicottville. This new lodge will be a huge tourist attraction for skiers and snowboarders all throughout Western New York, the Finger Lakes and the Southern Tier.

The 66,000-square foot resort replaces a building that dated back to 1962. Despite no snow accumulations, the cold weather has enabled the resort to make their own snow and open for the season.

Senator Young Again Renews Call for Strengthening Kendra's Law

People with severe mental illness are falling through the cracks

ALBANY - Following the wake of the tragic massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) has renewed her call for strengthening New York’s Kendra’s Law to ensure people with mental illness receive proper treatment, and vowed to push her legislation when session convenes in January.

“Obviously, Adam Lanza was a deeply disturbed person who needed help.  There is no other explanation for why he would murder 20 angelic children and the six adults who were trying to protect them,” Senator Young said.

Senator Young visits with John and Anne Garey as the couple celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary

Senator Young recently stopped by a party for John and Anne Garey as the couple celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary!

John and Anne were married on December 6, 1937, at the First Baptist Church in Olean. Together the couple raised three children, Nancy Shewairy, Sharyn Garey, and the late John A. Garey; they have 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

John and Anne Garey enjoy an active retirement together in their home in Olean where they have lived for more than 60 years. Anne continues to drive, cook meals and bake, while John mows the lawn, attends to household tasks and enjoys crossword puzzles.

What an incredible couple!

LIVONIA – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- Olean) awarded a New York State Conspicuous Service Cross Medal today to the family of Private First Class Mortimer Taft, who bravely served his county during World War II and passed away in 1969. The ceremony took place at the packed Harrison-Lee American Legion Post #283 in Livonia, NY.

Senator Young Renews Call for Strengthening Kendra's Law in Wake of Latest Subway Tragedy in New York City

A similar murder in 1999 was the catalyst for the original bill

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- Olean) is again calling for strengthening Kendra’s Law, a law that was put in place to help people with mental illness receive outpatient treatment, after a deranged man killed a Queens resident by pushing him in front of an oncoming subway near Times Square. Ki Suk Han, 58, died on Monday.

Visiting Jane’s Pantry in Mount Morris

Senator Cathy Young and Senator Pat Gallivan visit with Jane Oakes, owner of Jane’s Pantry at 84 Main Street in Mount Morris, during a walking tour of downtown. Jane, whose expertise in specialty foods makes her the “Queen of Licorice," carries a vast variety of New York State-produced, delicious food products in her shop. Mount Morris has become a destination for tourists and shoppers because of its restaurants and unique stores in the newly-restored historic downtown. The Senators, who passed legislation to leverage private sector investment for downtown revitalization that has grown small businesses and jobs in Livingston County and around the state, saw firsthand the positive results from their initiative. Congratulations to Jane and all of the downtown merchants!

Senator Young honors James Gallman for his years of service.

Senator Young was pleased to honor James Gallman for his years of service at an event this week in Allegany County. James Gallman served with the National Guard from 1966-1973, then later became an Allegany County Legislator and a Board of Elections Commissioner.

Senator Young presented him with a New York State Long and Faithful Service Ribbon and a framed companion certificate announcing the award signed by Maj. Gen. Murphy, the state Adjutant General. There was also a personal letter from the general to Lieutenant Gallman.
