Senator Young Presents Medals to Two Local Veterans

Dorothy Button and Thomas Threadgill were honored for their dedicated service

SALAMANCA – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- Olean) recently awarded service medals to two distinguished veterans at the Cattaraugus County American Legion Family Testimonial Dinner held at Salamanca American Legion Post #535. Yeoman First Class Dorothy Button received the Medal for Merit, which is based on a U.S. Coast Guard Achievement Medal. Technical Sergeant Thomas Threadgill was given the New York State Medal for Merit, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and a special commemorative medal from the Taiwanese government.

“So God Made a Farmer,” a speech by Paul Harvey, was made famous by this Dodge Ram Super Bowl advertisement. The speech was originally given by Harvey at a Future Farmers of America convention in 1978. I hope all of you view it for the first time or view it again. It is an excellent representation of what makes the American farmer so special. I am proud to have so many farms in my district and I am always amazed by their hard work and dedication. Thank you to all farmers throughout my district, New York State and America.

Senator Young attends the grand opening of Olean’s newest downtown shop, BelleRuche Bridal Boutique

Recently, Senator Young stopped by the grand opening of Olean’s newest downtown shop, BelleRuche Bridal Boutique.

The store specializes in wedding gowns and prom dresses, but also has bridesmaid dresses, mother dresses and accessories. The boutique is located at 119 N. Union Street in Olean and is a wonderful addition to our ever-growing downtown.

Pictured with Senator Young are owners Bonnie Vena, Susan Austin and Vic Vena. Vic was just elected as President of the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Senator Young Joins Senate Republicans To Call on Governor To Remove Utility Tax Surcharge Extension From Executive Budget

High utility costs remain an obstacle to economic growth and job creation

ALBANY - Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) joined Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos, members of the Senate Republican Conference and leaders of statewide business organizations to urge Governor Cuomo to remove the proposed extension of the utility tax surcharge from his Executive Budget. The 18-a surcharge, which has increased utility bills for every ratepayer in the state, is scheduled to expire on March 31, 2014.  The Governor’s proposed five-year extension would cost businesses and consumers a total of almost $3 billion.

Senator Young was recently honored at an event held by the Olean Community Theatre. Senator Young was praised for her support of the local theater and was the recipient of the Individual OVATION Award.

Senator Young Announces New Civil Service Test

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is seeking correction officers

 OLEAN – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) joined the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision in announcing that a New York State Department of Civil Service test will be administered on April 13, 2013 as part of a correction officer recruitment effort. The deadline for filing for the examination is February 25, 2013.

Senator Young recently stopped by a retirement party for Cristie Herbst, the editor of The Post-Journal in Jamestown.

Cristie Herbst began her career at The Post-Journal in 1972. She quickly worked her way through roles of increasing responsibility including a variety of reporting roles, Editor of the City and Region Desk and eventually Editor in 1982, a position she held until her retirement.

Newspaper journalism has changed dramatically in recent decades, especially with the increasing pace of technological change and Cristie Herbst has been an innovator in leading The Post-Journal into the digital age, transforming it into a multimedia source of information and news.

Ribbon cutting ceremony for Orchard Grove at the Woodlands.

Senator Young joined local officials and representatives from Heritage Ministries for a ribbon cutting ceremony for Orchard Grove at the Woodlands, a brand new adult care facility in West Ellicott.

Each of the three cottages, which are the first of their kind in Chautauqua County, contain twelve private rooms with a private bath and shower with “family-style” kitchen, living and dining room where seniors can congregate as they would in their own homes. Additionally seniors have access to outdoor recreational areas, perfect for enjoying the warmth of spring and summer. 

Congratulations to Heritage Ministries! The new buildings are wonderful and are a terrific alternative for our seniors!

Senator Young presented Corporal Bryen Barden with a proclamation honoring him for his service with the United States Marine Corps at a Welcome Home Reception.

Recently, Senator Young attended a Welcome Home Reception for Corporal Bryen Barden and presented him with a proclamation that honored him for his service with the United States Marine Corps.

Corporal Barden signed up for the Marine Corps Delayed Entry Program while he was a junior in high school. Less than a month after graduating from Falconer Central School with an Advanced Regents Diploma, he joined the United States Marine Corps.

Senator Young joined the Chautauqua Region Life Underwriters as they presented backpacks to CASA.

Senator Young joined the Chautauqua Region Life Underwriters as they presented backpacks to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) at their monthly meeting at the Cassadaga Country Club just before the holidays.

The Senator also talked to the group about issues in Albany and throughout the 57th Senate District, including health care, natural gas exploration, the financial impacts of Superstorm Sandy and regional high schools.

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) has received the “Guardian Award” from the New York Chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB/NY). The award is a testament to the Senator’s pro-business attitudes in working to revitalize the upstate economy and bring jobs to her district and the state. Senator Young Presents Posthumous Medal to Local WWII Veteran

First Lieutenant Wicks was part of several combat missions and was a POW for many months

DANSVILLE – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- Olean) awarded four service medals today to the family of the late First Lieutenant Robert W. Wicks, who courageously fought during World War II. First Lieutenant Wicks’ family will be receiving the Prisoner of War Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. The ceremony took place at the Daniel Goho American Legion Post #87 in Dansville.

Senator Young Responds to Governor Cuomo's State of the State Address

Encouraged by Cuomo’s pledge to not raise taxes, promote business growth

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) said she was encouraged by Governor Cuomo’s State of the State address’ focus on restoring the Upstate economy by concentrating on job growth, workforce training, no new taxes, infrastructure investment and incentives for business.

“Not raising taxes or fees is critical to making our state more competitive so more jobs can be created. We need to get people back to work, create good-paying jobs to sustain our families, and have career opportunities for our young people so they can stay after they graduate,” she said.

Senator Young presents a proclamation to Mike & Kelly Rapan honoring Mike’s father William, recognizing his 46 years of service to the Bolivar Fire Department. Mr. Rapan passed away in November.

Mr. Rapan was an active member of the Bolivar Fire Department from September 1966 until his passing. During this time, he held many offices, including Foreman, Vice President and President of the Bolivar Fire Department.
