Jamestown Native Celebrates Her 100th Birthday with Senator Cathy Young

Senator Cathy Young presented Emogene Swanson with a Senate Proclamation honoring her 100th birthday during WJTN FM's Saturday Breakfast Party at Friendly's in Jamestown on Saturday April 7th. Born on April 10, 1912, in Jamestown, Emogene Swanson is a daughter of Sophie and Albin Frankson; she was raised with her four brothers and one sister and later married Alvin Swanson. The couple was married for 67 years.

Also celebrating birthdays were Eleanor Cowing, who turned 95 years old, and Helen Cronk and Kermit Johnson, who both turned 80.

On a side note, the Saturday Breakfast Party is one of the longest running, live audience participation programs in the country.  The show was started in 1946 and is currently hosted by Dennis Webster.

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – 57th District) announced the state budget is passed – and it is early. “The Senate worked together with the Assembly and Governor Cuomo to pass an early budget that achieves the Senate Republicans’ goals of reducing state spending with no new taxes and creating new private sector jobs. The 2012-13 budget also includes mandate relief that will ease the burden on our taxpayers,” Senator Young said.

SENATOR CATHARINE YOUNG ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL SCHOOL AID IN 2012-13 BUDGET

            ALBANY – Schools in the 57th Senate District will be boosted with increases totaling nearly $22.2 million, or an average 4.37 percent, in additional aid from the state, announced Senator Catharine Young, (R,C,I-Olean).

            Statewide, total education aid is increased by $805 million over last year in the state budget. The 45 schools in the 57th Senate District, which includes all of Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany and half of Livingston counties, will receive more than half a billion dollars, totaling $530,802,964 in state assistance.

SENATOR CATHARINE YOUNG PLEASED WITH REINSTATEMENT OF SALES TAX “EXEMPTION”

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – 57th District) is applauding the restoration of a long-awaited state sales tax exemption for all clothes and shoes less than $110.

Sales tax varies by state with New York setting its state sales tax at four percent. Counties receive at least an additional three percent of sales tax. The state will now exempt its portion of the sales tax, which Senator Young said has been in place for far too long.

ALBANY – The New York State Senate passed the “Buy From the Backyard Act,” a bill co-sponsored by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-57th District), which promotes the purchase of food grown or produced locally. “’Buy From the Backyard’ encourages investment in New York’s agriculture and demonstrates our state’s commitment to the products grown, produced and harvested in our area. It reinforces the importance of supporting our local, hardworking farmers and aims to grow our economy,” said Senator Young.

WWII Veteran Honored Posthumously

At the American Legion Post in Brocton on Friday, February 24, Senator Cathy Young (R,C,I - 57th District) presented Jean and Steve Milliman (right) and John Morehouse (left) with medals honoring their father Gunner's Mate, Second Class Lewis Morehouse for his service with the United States Navy during WWII. Petty Officer Morehouse's great-grandson, Brody Rowan (center) also attended the event. Petty Officer Morehouse received all his honors posthumously, including the World War II Victory Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon, an Honorable Service Lapel Pin, and the U.S. Navy Honorable Discharge Lapel Pin

Veteran Honored for Service in Cold War

Fifty years after U.S. Air Force Retired Second Class Airman Karl Grantier retired from the military, he received a medal and certificate recognizing his service. During a meeting at the Angelica American Legion on Thursday, February 16, 2012, Senator Cathy Young presented Airman Grantier with the Good Conduct Medal and a Cold War Recognition Certificate.

Community Arts Mosaic

The mosaic was created during the Summer 2011 by nearly 200 area residents at the Cattaraugus County Arts Council under the direction of Ms. Oliver, an acclaimed clay artist and arts instructor.

SENATOR CATHARINE YOUNG ANNOUNCES ONE-HOUSE BUDGET RESOLUTION PASSES SENATE

ALBANY – The Senate passed a one-house budget resolution today that features initiatives to achieve job creation and economic growth, tax relief, Medicaid reform, and school aid restoration, announced Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – Olean).

The plan keeps spending growth under two percent and is less than what was proposed in Governor Andrew Cuomo’s $132.5 billion budget proposal.

“Our priorities reflect the priorities that people have told us they want and need. This plan is fiscally responsible, yet addresses urgent issues in a positive and productive way,” said Senator Young.
