John J. Maroon

Private First Class John J. Maroon was born at Niagara Falls in 1925 and, before completing high school, joined the U.S. Army in November 1943.

After being assigned to the 36th Infantry “Arrowhead” Division, Private Maroon fought in the Battle of Monte Cassino, and the capture and the liberation of Rome.

SENATOR CATHARINE YOUNG CO-SPONSORS LEGISLATION TO SHORT CIRCUIT CANADIAN TRANSMISSION LINE

 ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – Olean) announced legislation (S.7391) that would prohibit any electric corporation seeking to build or expand an electric facility or transmission line with that maintains a starting point outside the United States and an end point within New York State from using the power of eminent domain.

During a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Senator Young joined Energy Committee Chairman George Maziarz and other fellow state Senators, power generators, and business groups to highlight the negative impacts of the proposed Champlain Hudson Power Express Transmission Line (CHPE), a 1,000 MW underwater transmission line that would originate in Canada and end in New York City.

Norma Cummings

Norma Cummings, Program Planning Coordinator for Chautauqua County’s Office of Emergency Services, has dedicated her life to her family and her community.

As an emergency medical technician (EMT) instructor for SUNY Fredonia and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) trainer, Ms. Cummings has enhanced the pre-hospital medical attention of first responders both at the scene and in the ambulance, through the many EMTs she has trained in Chautauqua County. She established a training center and was instrumental in implementing a program placing automated external defibrillators in offices throughout the county.

Senator Catharine Young Visits Trinity Daycare, Learns How to Help Support Services

Christian | Caring | Safe | Responsible | Reliable. At Trinity Christian Daycare, 470 N. Main Street in Wellsville, Senator Cathy Young (R,C,I – Olean), spent time with children who are cared for with those principles in mind. Under the direction of Mrs. Carol English and her staff, children are provided with a safe, nurturing while they receive a basic education using activities that will help them grow spiritually, socially, physically, and emotionally. During her visit, Senator Young spoke with staff about the daycare center, and how she can be helpful in supporting quality daycare services.

SENATE PASSES DOMESTIC VIOLENCE LEGISLATION SPONSORED BY SENATOR CATHARINE YOUNG

ALBANY – Imagine you’ve been beaten or sexually assaulted by an abuser. It may have been a spouse, significant other, or another relative that harmed you, maybe even repeatedly. Now, imagine how you would feel facing your abuser in court. Currently, New York State’s Criminal Procedure Law only permits children deemed “vulnerable” by a judge to testify by closed-circuit television. Now, thanks to a bill sponsored by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – Olean), which has been passed in the state Senate, the law also would include “domestic violence victims” as “vulnerable” witnesses in criminal proceedings.

Senator Catharine Young Cuts the Ribbon at the Grand Opening of the Limestone American Legion

     When it began, the American Legion consisted of a small group of weary World War I veterans. Now, it is one of the largest, most influential non-profit groups in the United States with over 2.4 million members and 14,000 posts worldwide.     On Saturday, April 14, Senator Cathy Young (R,C,I – Olean) cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the Limestone American Legion Post, 941 N. Main Street, with Post Commander David Barger (right) and Vice Commander Jim Cochran, who worked hard to upgrade the Post.     Senator Young is an auxiliary member of the Hinsdale American Legion Post and works hard to address veterans’ needs.

SENATOR YOUNG VOTES FOR LEGISLATION TO PREVENT SEX ABUSE

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – Olean) announced the passage of legislation that aims to prevent sexual predators from gaining access to potential victims and to assist law enforcement in tracking the offenders’ locations.

“Today, the Senate passed eight bills that, among other initiatives, increase the amount of information collected and disseminated about sexual offenders, change the reporting requirements for the Sexual Offender Registration Act (SORA), and addresses the recidivism rates among sexual offenders. Predators are released into society on a daily basis, and every piece of legislation is critical in protecting our children and communities,” Senator Young said.

Jamestown Native Celebrates Her 100th Birthday with Senator Cathy Young

Senator Cathy Young presented Emogene Swanson with a Senate Proclamation honoring her 100th birthday during WJTN FM's Saturday Breakfast Party at Friendly's in Jamestown on Saturday April 7th. Born on April 10, 1912, in Jamestown, Emogene Swanson is a daughter of Sophie and Albin Frankson; she was raised with her four brothers and one sister and later married Alvin Swanson. The couple was married for 67 years.

Also celebrating birthdays were Eleanor Cowing, who turned 95 years old, and Helen Cronk and Kermit Johnson, who both turned 80.

On a side note, the Saturday Breakfast Party is one of the longest running, live audience participation programs in the country.  The show was started in 1946 and is currently hosted by Dennis Webster.

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – 57th District) announced the state budget is passed – and it is early. “The Senate worked together with the Assembly and Governor Cuomo to pass an early budget that achieves the Senate Republicans’ goals of reducing state spending with no new taxes and creating new private sector jobs. The 2012-13 budget also includes mandate relief that will ease the burden on our taxpayers,” Senator Young said.
