ALBANY - Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – Olean) today reminded motorists about a new law that requires vehicles to slow down or move over when an emergency vehicle or law enforcement vehicle is stopped on the side of the road.

OLEAN - When two Marines involved in a training mission off the coast of South Carolina were forced to eject from their aircraft after an engine failure, it was Olean native and Petty Officer 3rd Class (AMT-3) Andrew Witruke and his Coast Guard crew who were on scene to make the rescue.
CUBA, NY – Two area veterans who answered their Country’s call to military service before graduating from high school received long overdue diplomas during a special ceremony Monday at Cuba-Rushford High School. Senator Catharine Young (R,I,C – Olean) was joined by Cuba-Rushford Superintendent Kevin Shanley and Belfast Central Superintendent Judy May to present high school diplomas through New York State’s Operation Recognition in honor of Marine Corps Sergeant Lester Baker, West Clarksville, and deceased Army Air Forces Corporal June E. Lockwood, who was a Cuba native.
Many happy and excited community members, students, parents, and school personnel celebrated the official dedication of the Friendship Central School’s beautiful new classroom facilities and refurbished gymnasium. A sportsmanship statue was unveiled as part of the ceremonies. Sportsmanship essay contest winner Caylen Bednow (pictured right) earned the honor of being the model for the bronze figure that will be permanently displayed at the school. The statue was created by renowned artist David Poulin (pictured center). Mr. Poulin cast the bronze from a clay figure that was created by students under his supervion.

It is with great sadness to report that World War II hero Kenneth Johnson (in photo on right) has passed away as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Our sincere sympathies go out to the Johnson family and we pray for the speedy recovery of his great grandson. Recently we were able to honor Kenneth and below is a link to an article about that special day.

Members of the Dee Victor Thomas Unit 1155 of the Fillmore American Legion Auxiliary gathered at the Minard Park Gazebo recently to recognize four members of their unit for 25 years of continuous service.
