New York State Senate Passes Rape Victims Equality Act

Bill is backed by victims advocacy groups and the State DA’s Association

ALBANY – In a vote that protects victims and gives prosecutors the tools they need to convict violent sexual predators, the New York State Senate today passed the Rape Victims Equality Act (S.3710-C), which is sponsored by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean). The bi-partisan bill passed with overwhelming support.

Rural Resources Commission Discusses Successes from Budget, Plans Agenda for Rest of Session

ALBANY – As the Chair of the Legislative Commission on Rural Resources, Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) announced that the bi-partisan Commission charged with addressing the needs of rural New York has chalked up several policy victories so far this year.

“Traditionally, the Rural Resources Commission has functioned as a think tank with a focus on advancing rural New York. Throughout its thirty year history, the Commission has remained a cooperative effort. It brings together the Legislature as a whole, as well as interested parties to better understand the issues rural New Yorkers face and to develop legislative solutions to best meet those needs,” said Senator Young.

I Love My Park Day - Saturday, May 4th

State Budget Boosts Aid to Schools in 57th Senate District

Funding to increase by almost $1 billion statewide, more than $19 million in the district

ALBANY - School aid is boosted by nearly $1 billion in the state budget, with schools in the 57th Senate receiving more than $19 million over last year, announced Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean).

"The Senate fought hard to increase school aid to invest in our children and give relief to the taxpayers. Funding for schools in my district will total $554,616,011 – a large share of the statewide allocation of $21.1 billion," Senator Young said.

Senate Passes Final Budget Bills

Budget delivers substantial tax relief to families, small businesses and manufacturers

ALBANY - Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) announced the Senate has passed a soundly balanced, fiscally responsible state budget that controls spending and provides significant tax relief to families and seniors, and reduces the tax burden on small businesses and manufacturers to help create jobs.

The Assembly plans on passing matching budget bills on Thursday.

"For the third consecutive year, the budget will be passed on time, and it includes many initiatives that are steps in the right direction to make our state a more affordable place to live, work and do business," Senator Young said.

Senator Young Helps Two Local WWII Veterans Obtain Overdue Medals

Technical Sergeant Handrahan and Walter A. Bonney recognized for their military service

OLEAN – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- Olean) helped obtain medals for both a veteran of the air war in Europe during World War II and for the family of a World War II veteran who served in the Aleutian Islands and in Europe. The medals were presented recently.

At a ceremony at the Bolivar American Legion on March 16, the family of the late Technician Fifth Grade Walter A. Bonney received medals earned for his service during World War II as part of the Aleutian Islands Campaign and the Central Europe Campaign.

ALBANY- Growing the state’s agriculture industry and helping New York’s family farms prosper is the goal of the “Grown in New York” plan, unveiled recently by Senator Catharine Young and Senator Patty Ritchie, Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee.  The Senators were joined at a Capitol news conference by other members of the committee, as well as leaders of the New York Farm Bureau to announce a plan to strengthen the state’s $5.2 billion agriculture industry by expanding markets for New York-grown products, improving the bottom lines of family farms, and investing in the future of farming.

Senator Young Presents Medals to Two Local Veterans

Dorothy Button and Thomas Threadgill were honored for their dedicated service

SALAMANCA – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- Olean) recently awarded service medals to two distinguished veterans at the Cattaraugus County American Legion Family Testimonial Dinner held at Salamanca American Legion Post #535. Yeoman First Class Dorothy Button received the Medal for Merit, which is based on a U.S. Coast Guard Achievement Medal. Technical Sergeant Thomas Threadgill was given the New York State Medal for Merit, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and a special commemorative medal from the Taiwanese government.

Senator Young Joins Senate Republicans To Call on Governor To Remove Utility Tax Surcharge Extension From Executive Budget

High utility costs remain an obstacle to economic growth and job creation

ALBANY - Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) joined Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos, members of the Senate Republican Conference and leaders of statewide business organizations to urge Governor Cuomo to remove the proposed extension of the utility tax surcharge from his Executive Budget. The 18-a surcharge, which has increased utility bills for every ratepayer in the state, is scheduled to expire on March 31, 2014.  The Governor’s proposed five-year extension would cost businesses and consumers a total of almost $3 billion.

Senator Young Announces New Civil Service Test

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is seeking correction officers

 OLEAN – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) joined the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision in announcing that a New York State Department of Civil Service test will be administered on April 13, 2013 as part of a correction officer recruitment effort. The deadline for filing for the examination is February 25, 2013.

ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) has received the “Guardian Award” from the New York Chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB/NY). The award is a testament to the Senator’s pro-business attitudes in working to revitalize the upstate economy and bring jobs to her district and the state. Only 10 legislators in the entire state received this prestigious honor, according to NFIB/NY.
