Senate Measure Improves Safety in Residential Youth Facilities

“Renee’s Law” Expands Information Available to Those Involved in the Placement of Violent Youth

ALBANY –  The New York State Senate today passed a measure to protect the staff and occupants in group homes and other youth residential facilities. “Renee’s Law” (S2625), sponsored by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean), increases the criminal history and other information available to those involved in residential placements for violent youth offenders so that a thorough evaluation of the youth's rehabilitation and the risk they pose to the community can be performed.

Berger Commission-Style Panel To Make Binding Recommendations 

ALBANY - The New York State Senate passed 14 regulatory reform bills yesterday as the first part of a major initiative, that includes statewide public forums, to identify and eliminate thousands of costly and unnecessary government regulations that inhibit job creation and drive up local property taxes. Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) applauded the package’s passage as a win for taxpayers, and growing the economy and jobs.

Senate Passes Bill to Increase Access to Dentists in Underserved Communities

Measure would make dentists eligible for “Doctors Across New York”

ALBANY - Untreated oral diseases can lead to a number of health problems, some of them even life threatening, yet a severe shortage of dentists in underserved areas has left many New Yorkers without access to care, according to Senator Catharine Young (R,C,Ind-Olean), sponsor of “Dentists Across New York” which passed the state Senate yesterday.

The legislation (S.2190) would alleviate the issue by expanding the “Doctors Across New York” program and enabling dentists to be recruited and receive incentives to work in communities with dentist shortfalls.

Cold War Veteran Honored for his service by Senator Young

OLEAN – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I- Olean) today awarded five service awards to a local Air Force veteran who served a specialized role in supporting our military during the Cold War. Kevin J. Smeal was an airframe repair specialist during the 1980s, and his service and expertise was vital in helping our nation maintain its strategic readiness during the height of the Cold War.

New York State Senate Passes Rape Victims Equality Act

Bill is backed by victims advocacy groups and the State DA’s Association

ALBANY – In a vote that protects victims and gives prosecutors the tools they need to convict violent sexual predators, the New York State Senate today passed the Rape Victims Equality Act (S.3710-C), which is sponsored by Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean). The bi-partisan bill passed with overwhelming support.

Rural Resources Commission Discusses Successes from Budget, Plans Agenda for Rest of Session

ALBANY – As the Chair of the Legislative Commission on Rural Resources, Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean) announced that the bi-partisan Commission charged with addressing the needs of rural New York has chalked up several policy victories so far this year.

“Traditionally, the Rural Resources Commission has functioned as a think tank with a focus on advancing rural New York.
