FUSCHILLO LEGISLATION TO PROTECT CONSUMERS FROM PAY-PER-CALL PRIZE SCHEMES PASSED BY SENATE

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced today that the New York State Senate has passed legislation he sponsors to protect residents from pay-per-call prize schemes.

     “Each year, thousands of residents are targeted in pay-per-call prize schemes that promise a free prize, but ultimately swindle consumers into paying exorbitant telephone fees which often cost more than the prizes themselves. In these fraudulent ‘contests’, the clear winner is never the consumer. That’s why these schemes need to be banned in New York State,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO AND CCMAC TO OFFER FREE SKIN CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM IN COPIAGUE ON JULY 19TH

SENATOR FUSCHILLO THANKS CENTENNIAL AVENUE STUDENTS FOR PARTICIPATING IN FOOD DRIVE

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently visited Centennial Avenue Elementary School in Roosevelt to thank the students for participating in a food drive he sponsored to benefit families in need.

     All the food collected by the Centennial Avenue students will be used by Long Island Cares: the Harry Chapin Food Bank, which serves a network of over 540 community based organizations, including food pantries, soup kitchens, child care programs, disability organizations, and veterans services. The students’ efforts will provide much needed help to the over 300,000 Long Islanders who don’t know where their next meal is going to come from.

FUSCHILLO LEGISLATION TO EXPAND ACCESS TO VACCINES PASSED BY SENATE

Legislation Would Add Shingles Vaccine to the List of Vaccinations Pharmacists are Permitted to Administer

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced today that legislation he sponsors to give residents greater access to the shingles vaccine has been passed by the New York State Senate.

     The legislation (S3808B) would add the shingles vaccine to the list of immunizations that trained licensed pharmacists are permitted to administer to adults, when ordered by a patient's physician or nurse practitioner.

KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WORKS IN SENATOR FUSCHILLO’S OFFICE AS PART OF KENNEDY’S “SENIOR EXPERIENCE” PROGRAM

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick, pictured right) recently welcomed Kennedy High School Senior Brandon Grabelsky (pictured left) to spend several weeks working in his district office as part of Kennedy’s “Senior Experience” program.

     Kennedy’s “Senior Experience” program is a progressive, hands-on program that allows graduating seniors to work with professionals in a field of their choice. During the course of the program, students learn about the day-to-day responsibilities and challenges in the chosen field, while gaining knowledge of the particular requirements involved.

SENATE PASSES FUSCHILLO LEGISLATION TO PROTECT CONSUMERS FROM BEING CHARGED TO OBTAIN UNCLAIMED FUNDS IN THEIR NAME

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that the New York State Senate passed legislation he sponsors to protect consumers from being charged to obtain unclaimed funds. The legislation would require companies that charge a fee to obtain a consumer’s unclaimed funds to inform that person that they can obtain the funds on their own free of charge.

With no signs of the federal partisan gridlock letting up, Albany needs to accomplish something in which Washington has shown little interest: repealing this nearly fifty percent tax increase and restoring these savings for hard working commuters.

Legislation Would Prohibit Teens Ages 16 and Under from Using Indoor UV Tanning Devices

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that the New York State Senate has passed legislation he sponsors to help protect teens from the dangers of skin cancer. The legislation (S2917A) would strengthen the state’s indoor tanning law by prohibiting teens ages 16 and under from using indoor ultraviolet (UV) tanning devices.

FUSCHILLO LEGISLATION TO PROHIBIT INMATES FROM ACCESSING SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS RECEIVES FINAL PASSAGE FROM SENATE

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced today that legislation he sponsors, which would prohibit inmates from being employed in any capacity that affords them access to the collection or processing of social security numbers, has received final passage from the New York State Senate.

     This new law would amend the Correction Law to add an additional restriction on use of inmate labor, prohibiting the collection or processing of social security numbers by prisoners.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES PASSAGE OF LEGISLATION TO PROTECT CONSUMERS FROM INTRUSIVE TELEMARKETERS

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R – Merrick) today announced the passage of legislation to protect New Yorkers from intrusive or unwanted telemarketing practices. The legislation (S. 7567A), cosponsored by Senator Fuschillo, regulates all telemarketers who do business in New York, wherever they may be located, and adds new consumer protections from unwelcome prerecorded calls, known as robocalls, from telemarketers.

     In 2000, Senator Fuschillo authored the law creating New York State’s Telemarketer “Do Not Call” Registry, which gave New Yorkers the opportunity to register their home telephone numbers with the Consumer Protection Board and prohibit telemarketers from making unsolicited calls to numbers on the registry.

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed a legislative resolution he sponsored honoring North Bellmore resident Jonathan Spohrer for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. 

     Jonathan is a member of Troop 577 in Bellmore, and through his years of dedication to the scouts, hard work rising through the scouting’s ranks, and community service, Jonathan has distinguished himself as a leader worthy of scouting’s most prestigious honor.

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed a legislative resolution he sponsored honoring Lindenhurst resident Joseph T. Mackey for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.

     “Joseph’s dedication to helping others in need is admirable,” said Senator Fuschillo. “He is a wonderful example of what hard work and determination can accomplish, and I am certain that great things lie ahead for this incredible young man,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES PASSAGE OF “I-STOP” LEGISLATION TO REDUCE PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R – Merrick) today announced the passage of legislation by the State Senate and Assembly to combat the escalating problem of prescription drug abuse. The “I-Stop” legislation would make significant changes to the way prescription drugs are distributed and monitored in New York State.

     The bill (S7637), cosponsored by Senator Fuschillo, includes “real time” prescription tracking to provide more information to doctors and pharmacists, in an effort to prevent deaths from abuse and overdoses of prescription drugs, particularly painkillers.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO OFFERS FREE INTERNET SAFETY BROCHURE FOR FAMILIES

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R – Merrick) is offering a free cyber-safety brochure to help parents keep their children safe and secure while using the Internet. 

     The Internet Safety: What Every Parent Should Know brochure provides information about how parents can utilize parental control tools to help keep their children safe while using the Internet. 

     The brochure also offers a list of “simple rules for online safety” that parents can instruct their children to follow so that they protect themselves when going online. Additionally, the brochure offers tips on ground rules parents can establish with their children before using the Internet.

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today was named one of the “Top 50 Most Influential Long Islanders” for 2012 by the Long Island Press.

     The annual “power list” profiles 50 Long Islanders who have considerable influence over daily life on Long Island. Members of the list are selected from hundreds of potential candidates and are chosen based on their contributions to Long Island and their impact on the Island over the past year.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO SUPPORTS THOSE WALKING TO FIND A CURE FOR LYMPHOMA AT 2012 GREATER NEW YORK LYMPHOMATHON

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently participated in the 2012 Greater New York Lymphomathon, where hundreds walked to raise critical funds for lymphoma research and education. Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that occurs when white blood cells that help protect the body from infection and disease begin behaving abnormally.

     Sponsored by the Lymphoma Research Foundation, the Lymphomathon is a non-competitive 5K walk where survivors, family, friends, community and corporate teams walk in honor and in memory of those whose lives have been touched by lymphoma. Hundreds of walkers participated in the event.
