Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed legislation he cosponsors to restore the STAR property tax rebate check program. Restoring the program would deliver valuable property tax savings to senior citizens and middle class families.
“Long Island families pay some of the country’s highest property taxes and many are stretching their family budgets thin to survive in this economy. They need real and direct tax relief. Restoring the STAR rebate check program would deliver valuable property tax savings to overtaxed, overburdened Long Island families and allow them to keep more of their hard earned money,” said Senator Fuschillo.
Following a new National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report which calls for more comprehensive driver history checks of bus drivers, New York State Transportation Committee Chairman Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) called on the New York State Assembly to pass legislation that would require criminal background checks for bus drivers. The legislation, which Senator Fuschillo sponsors, was approved by the New York State Senate in January.
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently visited the Roosevelt Children’s Academy to thank students for lending a helping hand to families in need.
The students collected 1,500 pounds of food for a food drive Senator Fuschillo is sponsoring in conjunction with Long Island Cares: the Harry Chapin Food Bank. The food collected by the students will be used by Long Island Cares to help serve the over 300,000 Long Islanders who don’t know where their next meal is going to come from.
Legislation Would Help New York State Create Jobs, Promote Economic Development and Repair Transportation Infrastructure Through Public-Private Partnerships
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, today announced that the Committee has approved legislation to better enable New York State to utilize public-private partnerships to create jobs, promote economic development, and address its transportation infrastructure crisis.
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), in conjunction with the Integrated Medical Foundation, will be sponsoring a free prostate cancer screening program in Copiague.
The free screening program will be held on Thursday, June 28th between 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm at the Copiague Library, which is located at 50 Deauville Boulevard in Copiague. The free screenings will be conducted by Dr. Barry Shepard of Advanced Urology Centers of New York.

Senator Fuschillo, Assemblyman McDonough, and Councilwoman Cullin went to the Merrick Train Station to speak with the Council members who were traveling into Manhattan to march in the annual Celebrate Israel Parade.
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Senator Owen H. Johnson (R-Babylon) today awarded the New York State Senate Liberty Medal to Grace Varley, a 5-year-old girl from Amityville, for heroically helping to save her younger brother’s life.
“In a situation which could be very frightening for a young child, Grace showed remarkable poise, calm, and maturity. As a result of her quick thinking, she was able to get help for her brother and save his life. Grace is a true hero and I’m pleased to present her with this much deserved honor,” said Senator Fuschillo.
2012 NEW JOBS-NY Plan Would Create Jobs, Cut Taxes, and Control State Spending

Senator Fuschillo supported the legislation in the Senate.
Legislation Would Make it Harder for Professional Shoplifters to Resell Stolen Goods Through Itinerant Vendors
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that legislation he sponsored to help prevent the resale of stolen goods through itinerant vendors has been passed by the New York State Senate.
Senator Fuschillo’s legislation (S525A) would expand the current law prohibiting itinerant vendors from selling baby food and over the counter medications to also include batteries and cosmetics. These items are prime targets of organized retail theft gangs which steal large quantities of them and resell them through itinerant vendors, like those at flea markets.
“Earlier today, the New York State Thruway Authority Board voted to begin the process to implement a 45 percent increase on certain commercial tolls. They should reconsider their decision based on the economic impact it will have on New York’s businesses and families.
A 45 percent toll increase would dramatically raise costs on trucking companies that are transporting goods across the state. While this is characterized a commercial toll increase, businesses will not be the only ones affected. Ultimately, consumers will pay for these cost increases in the form of higher prices on all types of goods.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently partnered with the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board in sponsoring a free car seat safety check where parents could have their children’s car seats checked for proper installation. The program was held at John Burns Park in Massapequa Park.
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R- Merrick) along with Senator Kemp Hannon (R- Garden City), recently congratulated long-time Freeport business owner Paul Conte of Paul Conte Cadillac on being named “Dealer of the Year” by General Motors. Senators Fuschillo and Hannon presented Mr. Conte with a legislative resolution they sponsored, which was passed by the State Senate, in honor of the achievement.
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently visited the Roosevelt Children’s Academy to thank students for participating in the Senate’s Earth Day Poster Contest.
As part of the contest, children made posters which illustrated the importance of “reducing, reusing, and recycling” in order to protect the environment. 70 students from the Roosevelt Children’s Academy participated in the program.
Senator Fuschillo presented each of the students with a certificate of merit and a letter thanking them for raising awareness about how to protect the environment.
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently joined with members of the Wantagh community in paying tribute to America’s heroes at the annual Wantagh Memorial Day Ceremony.
The Memorial Day Ceremony is an annual tradition which is organized by members of Wantagh American Legion Post 1273. Wantagh residents, joined by local boy scout and girl scout troops, community organizations, and the Wantagh Fire Department, attended the ceremony to show their appreciation for the veterans who served our country and remember those who made the supreme sacrifice in defense of our nation.

The Merrick/North Merrick Memorial Day Parade is an annual community tradition which pays tribute to the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who served our nation, most especially the ones who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country. Hundreds of Merokians lined Merrick Avenue between Veterans Plaza and the Veterans Monument at Lee Avenue to view the parade and show their appreciation for our American heroes.
