     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate passed legislation he sponsored to disqualify all convicted sex offenders from obtaining or holding a real estate appraisal license. The legislation is designed to prevent sex offenders from gaining entry into people’s homes.

SENATE PASSES FUSCHILLO LEGISLATION TO PREVENT CRIMINALS FROM ESCAPING JUSTICE THROUGH LEGAL NAME CHANGES

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate has passed legislation he sponsors to prevent criminals from changing their name to avoid the justice system or their legal obligations.

     “Convicted criminals shouldn’t be able to avoid the legal system and hide their criminal histories through a name change. Unfortunately, current law makes it far too easy for them to do that. Stronger safeguards are needed to prevent criminals from using legal name changes to run from the law,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE APPROVES LEGISLATION TO RAISE PENALTIES FOR DRIVERS WHO ILLEGALLY PASS STOPPED SCHOOL BUSES

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, today announced that the Committee has passed legislation to raise the penalties for drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses.

        “Drivers are required to stop for school buses with red lights flashing in order to protect the children boarding or exiting the bus. Illegally passing a stopped school bus jeopardizes the lives and safety of the students on the bus. Stronger fines and penalties will create a greater deterrent and give drivers another incentive not to pass stopped school buses,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES SENATE PASSAGE OF LEGISLATION TO PREVENT TEEN DRIVING CRASHES

Proposed Law Would Establish Teen Driver Safety Commission to Examine and Review Teen Driver Training Requirements & Causes of Crashes

     New York State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed legislation he supports to help prevent teen driving deaths and crashes.

     The legislation (S3546) would create a Teen Driver Safety Commission to examine ways to improve driver education and training programs so that teens are better prepared to handle the challenges they will face on the road.

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently welcomed Freeport resident Kathleen Keating to the State Capitol in Albany. Senator Fuschillo invited Ms. Keating to Albany to recognize her for being named Ms. New York Senior America 2011.

        The Ms. Senior America pageant is an annual event designed to showcase the talents and inner beauty of women ages 60 and over. Kathleen Keating was chosen for the honor among women from all across New York State to serve as a role model of the dignity, maturity, and inner beauty of all senior Americans.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO & TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD BRING PASSPORT PROGRAM TO NORTH MERRICK

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently partnered with Town of Hempstead Clerk Mark Bonilla and Supervisor Kate Murray to bring the Town’s mobile passport van to North Merrick.

        Senator Fuschillo arranged for the passport van to come to the North Merrick Public Library to give residents an easy and convenient way to obtain or renew a U.S. passport.

        Residents who were unable to attend the program but would like more information about obtaining a passport or future mobile passport programs can call the Hempstead Town Clerk’s passport division at 516-812-3100.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO, MAYOR HARDWICK & DEPARTMENT OF FINANCIAL SERVICES TO BRING FORECLOSURE PREVENTION PROGRAM TO FREEPORT ON MAY 18th

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is partnering with the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) and Mayor Andrew Hardwick and the Village of Freeport to help provide services to homeowners facing foreclosure.

     Senator Fuschillo and Mayor Hardwick have arranged with DFS to bring its Mobile Foreclosure Relief Center to the Village of Freeport on Friday, May 18th. The Mobile Center will be stationed in the Freeport Train Station Parking lot at the northeast corner of Sunrise Highway and Henry Street from 11 am to 7 pm to assist residents in danger of losing their homes.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO INFORMS RESIDENTS HOW TO TRACK THEIR INCOME TAX REFUND STATUS

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is informing residents who are expecting a state or federal income tax refund how to track when their refund will arrive.

Both the IRS and the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance allow residents to track the status of their income tax refunds through the internet after their tax returns have been filed. Taxpayers can utilize the tracking service within 72 hours of filing an electronic tax return or four weeks after filing a paper return.

There is no charge to track the status of state or federal income tax refunds.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO HELPS KICK OFF NORTH BELLMORE/NORTH MERRICK LITTLE LEAGUE SEASON

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently joined with the players, coaches, and parents of the North Bellmore/North Merrick Little League at Jacob Gunther Field in kicking off the 2012 little league season.

The North Bellmore/North Merrick Little League provides baseball and softball leagues, as well as tournament and instructional opportunities, to boys and girls of all ages and experience levels. The league serves over 1,500 children.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO TO SPONSOR FREE CAR SEAT SAFETY CHECK IN MASSAPEQUA PARK

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) will be sponsoring a free car seat safety check on Saturday, May 19th in Massapequa Park.

The free car seat safety check will be held from 9 am to 12 pm at John Burns Park (front west parking lot), located at 4990 Merrick Road in Massapequa Park.

Officials from the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board will be performing free safety seat inspections to make sure that drivers have their children’s car seats properly installed and secured. Car seats can reduce the threat of injury or death by as much as 65 percent, but only if they are installed properly, according to the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board. The Nassau County Traffic Safety Board also estimates that as many as 90 percent of car seats are improperly installed.

        Anthony, a senior at Massapequa High School and a member of Troop 776, was in Albany to view a working session of the State Legislature.

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed legislation he supports to ensure that residents receive their state income tax refunds as quickly as possible.

        “Tax refunds belong to taxpayers, not the government. Someone who files on-time and is entitled to a refund deserves to have their money returned to them in a timely fashion. That’s even more important in this economy, when so many families are trying to do more with less. Under this legislation, that’s exactly what would happen,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO & TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD SPONSOR FREE SENIOR ID PROGRAM IN WANTAGH

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently partnered with Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla and Supervisor Kate Murray in sponsoring a free Senior I.D. Card Program at the Wantagh Library.

        The program enabled Town of Hempstead seniors to receive free wallet-sized photo ID cards that could be helpful in case of an emergency. The senior ID cards contain the cardholder’s emergency contact numbers, physician’s contact information, allergies, and other vital information that could be useful to paramedics in a medical emergency. Nearly 100 local seniors received free ID cards through the program.

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee today announced that the committee has passed legislation which would raise penalties for drivers who hit and run. 

        "Drivers who flee the scene of an accident show no regard for the welfare of others. It's a heartless crime that deserves a tougher penalty. This legislation will give prosecutors stronger tools to take hit and run drivers off the roads," said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO CONGRATULATES FARMINGDALE STATE COLLEGE ON ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently congratulated Farmingdale State College on reaching its 100th anniversary.

        Senator Fuschillo presented Farmingdale State College President Dr. Hubert Keen with a legislative resolution he sponsored commemorating the milestone event. The resolution was recently passed by the New York State Senate.

        Established on April 15, 1912, Farmingdale State College is the oldest public college on Long Island. With 37 different degree programs and an enrollment of over 7,000 students, it has grown into one of Long Island’s premier institutions for higher education.
