SENATOR FUSCHILLO TO SPONSOR BREAST CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM IN FREEPORT

        New York State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), in conjunction with NuHealth/Nassau Health Care Corporation, will be sponsoring a breast cancer screening program on Thursday, April 19th from 8:45 am to 12:00 pm at the Freeport Library. The library is located at 144 West Merrick Road in Freeport.

        Appointments are necessary and will be scheduled on first-come, first-served basis. On site nurses and technicians will provide a mammography, a clinical breast examination and instructions for self examination. Patients and their physicians will be notified of the exam results.

FUSCHILLO LEGISLATION CREATING HIGHER PENALTIES FOR ILLEGALLY ENTERING TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES PASSED BY SENATE

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced Senate passage of legislation he sponsors to raise penalties for individuals who seek to evade security and scrutiny at transportation facilities and other public places. 

     The legislation (S5232) creates stronger penalties for individuals trying to illegally access secure areas at airports, train stations, and bus terminals, as well for those who steal law enforcement or fire department identification.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES APPROVAL OF NEW ANTI-CRIME LEGISLATION

Legislation Would Expand DNA Databank & Provide Enhanced Crime Fighting Tool for Law Enforcement

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently voted in favor of legislation to help better enable law enforcement to use DNA to catch criminals.

     The legislation (S6733) would expand the State’s DNA databank by requiring anyone convicted of a felony or penal law misdemeanor to submit a DNA sample.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO VOTES FOR PORT AUTHORITY REFORM LEGISLATION

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that the New York State Senate has passed legislation he cosponsors to help make the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey more open, accountable, and transparent to residents.

     “The Port Authority has been heading in the wrong direction for far too long. The disgraceful way it treated residents during last year’s toll increase process is just one of far too many examples of why it needs to change the way it operates. More accountability and transparency are sorely needed and long overdue. That’s exactly what this legislation would bring to the Port Authority,” said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES APPROVAL OF SENATE’S 2012-13 BUDGET RESOLUTION

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed its 2012-13 budget resolution which controls state spending, contains no new taxes, fees, and unfunded mandates and helps create new jobs.

     “This budget resolution focuses on the right priorities; cutting taxes, controlling spending, and promoting job creation and economic development,” said Senator Fuschillo. “We got New York State headed back in the right direction last year by delivering on these priorities. Now we need to build on that success to keep the state moving forward. That’s exactly what this budget plan would do.”

SENATOR FUSCHILLO INFORMS RESIDENTS ABOUT HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCE REBATE PROGRAM

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is informing residents about a program which will provide rebates to residents who purchase high-efficiency refrigerators and clothes washers. The rebate program, which is being administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), will begin on Monday, March 19th.

SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE APPROVES LEGISLATION TO STRENGTHEN LEANDRA’S LAW

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, today announced that the Committee has approved legislation to strengthen Leandra’s Law. The legislation would make it harder for offenders to avoid using ignition interlocks as required by Leandra’s Law.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO JOINS WITH MERRICK COMMUNITY IN WELCOMING HOME CORPORAL KEVIN VAUGHAN

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently joined with the Merrick community in welcoming home one of its local heroes, Marine Corps Corporal Kevin Vaughan.

     Corporal Vaughan, a 2007 graduate of Mepham High School, was serving his second tour of duty in Afghanistan when he was wounded by a roadside bomb. He lost his left leg and has spent the last several months at Walter Reed Hospital undergoing rehabilitation and physical therapy.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO & ASSEMBLYMAN WISNIEWSKI TO HOLD JOINT PUBLIC HEARING EXAMINING PORT AUTHORITY’S FINANCES & LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY

     New York State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and New Jersey State Assemblyman John S. Wisniewski (D-Sayreville) today announced plans to hold a joint public hearing on the Port Authority’s finances and lack of accountability.  The hearing will be held jointly by the New York State Senate’s Transportation Committee and the New Jersey General Assembly’s Committee on Transportation, Public Works, and Independent Authorities.

     The hearing, which will be held on Friday, April 20th at 10:30 am at the Center for the Arts at the College of Staten Island, will examine the Authority’s spending practices and financial management, as well as ways to make the Authority more accountable and transparent.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO THANKS SEAFORD CHAMBER FOR PARTICIPATING IN FIRST-AID SUPPLY DRIVE

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently thanked the Seaford Chamber of Commerce for participating in his first-aid supply drive.

     Chamber members collected several boxes full of bandages, gauze pads, cotton balls, peroxide, and antiseptic ointments as part of the drive. A number of chamber members also opened up their businesses to serve as drop-off points where residents could bring items to donate.

     All items collected through the first-aid supply drive will be donated to the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN), which serves families in need throughout our communities.

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that he is partnering with the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) to help provide services to homeowners facing foreclosure.

     Senator Fuschillo has arranged for specialists from DFS to bring the Department’s Mobile Command Center to Marjorie Post Park, located on the corner of Merrick Road and Unqua Road in Massapequa, from 11 am to 7 pm on Friday, March 16th to assist residents in danger of losing their homes.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO AND ASSEMBLYMAN MCDONOUGH CONGRATULATE MEPHAM SCIENCE STUDENT ON BEING NAMED NATIONAL SEMI-FINALIST IN INTEL-SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Assemblyman David McDonough (R-North Merrick) recently congratulated Mepham High School science student Bilal Siddiqui on being named a national semi-finalist in the 2012 Intel Science Talent Search. Senator Fuschillo and Assemblyman McDonough also presented Bilal with a legislative resolution honoring his accomplishment.

     “This is an incredible achievement by a remarkable student. After working tirelessly and spending countless hours on study and research, Bilal has been named one of the country’s elite young scientists. I’m certain this is the first of many accomplishments we’ll be seeing from Bilal in the future, and I wish him all the best,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO: SUSPENSION OF ALLEGEDLY FRAUDULENT DRIVING SCHOOL’S LICENSE SHOWS NEED FOR GREATER OVERSIGHT OF BUS INDUSTRY

     “Today’s announcement on the suspension of the N&Y Professional Service Line driving school’s license following allegations of fraud is yet another example of why we need greater oversight of the bus industry.

     This scam, in which the school’s owners are charged with helping drivers cheat on the written commercial driver license exam for bus drivers, highlights the continuing problem of individuals trying to get behind the wheel of a bus without the proper qualifications.

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that he is partnering with Assemblyman David McDonough (R-North Merrick), Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Angie Cullin, and the American Red Cross in sponsoring a blood drive on March 29th.

     The blood drive will be held at the Freeport Recreation Center, located at 130 East Merrick Road in Freeport, from 1 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, March 29th.
