New Law Increases the Look-Back Period to Elevate Penalties for Assault on a Child Younger Than 11 Years Old

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently announced that legislation he supported enacting Jay-J’s Law, which allows for tougher penalties against offenders who have been convicted of repeatedly abusing a child, has been signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO INFORMS RESIDENTS HOW TO SEARCH FOR UNCLAIMED FUNDS

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is informing residents how they can find out if they are entitled to any of the $12 billion in New York State unclaimed funds.

     Unclaimed funds are monies such as un-cashed checks, old bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, and stocks and dividends that people have left dormant or forgotten about. State law requires banks, utilities, and many other businesses and companies to turn over these inactive accounts to the State Comptroller’s Office, which holds the funds in trust until they can be reclaimed by their rightful owner.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES NEW LAW TO RESTRUCTURE UTILITY OPERATIONS ON LONG ISLAND

Privatized Utility System Will Focus on High Performance under Strengthened State Oversight

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently announced that legislation he supported that dramatically revamps the electric utility on Long Island has been signed into law by Governor Cuomo. The legislation privatizes utility operations on Long Island, improves customer service, including stabilizing rates and enhancing emergency response and preparation; reduces the cost of Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) debt; and implements tough state oversight for the new utility company. It also achieves savings to allow the new utility to seek a rate freeze for 2013, 2014 and 2015.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES SIGNING OF LEGISLATION TO STRENGTHEN LEANDRA’S LAW

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced today that legislation he sponsored to strengthen Leandra’s Law has been signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

     The new law will ensure that more convicted drunk drivers use ignition interlocks as required by law. It will also make it more difficult for drivers to claim they will not operate a car and enhance penalties for individuals who try to escape the law through fraud.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES NEW TRAFFIC SAFETY IMPROVEMENT ON SUNRISE HIGHWAY IN MERRICK

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that, in response to his request, the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) will be making a new traffic safety improvement at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Hewlett Avenue in Merrick. 

     Senator Fuschillo urged the DOT to explore new safety improvements at the intersection on behalf of constituents who expressed concerns that the intersection, which is often extremely busy and congested, was dangerous for pedestrians and motorists.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO & COUNTY EXECUTIVE MANGANO SPONSOR FREE KIDPIX PHOTO ID PROGRAM IN WANTAGH

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano recently sponsored a free KidPix photo ID program in Wantagh. 

     Families who participated in the program received a free, wallet sized kidpix card with their child’s name, physical description, contact information, fingerprint, and photograph. In the event that a child goes missing, parents can give the KidPix card to law enforcement as a helpful tool to help return the child home more quickly.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO & TOBACCO ACTION COALITION OF LONG ISLAND CELEBRATE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EXPANDED CLEAN INDOOR AIR ACT

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island today celebrated the 10th anniversary of New York State’s expanded Clean Indoor Air Act. Senator Fuschillo authored the law to help protect individuals from the dangers of secondhand smoke. 

     “New York State’s expanded Clean Indoor Air Act was enacted to save lives and protect individuals from the dangers of secondhand smoke. As we have seen over the last 10 years, the law is working. Public health has improved, public support for the law continues to be strong, and New Yorkers are safer from the harmful effects of secondhand-smoke,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO SALUTES THE WOUNDED WARRIORS

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently joined with local residents and veterans to support the 1,000 participants of the annual Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride.

     Senator Fuschillo saluted the riders at the kick-off ceremony held at Babylon Town Hall. Senator Fuschillo then joined with members of the VFW Post 7223 and the Amityville Historical Society in cheering on the riders as they passed through downtown Amityville on their way to Overlook Beach.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO & TOWN OF BABYLON SPONSOR FREE SENIOR ID CARD PROGRAM IN LINDENHURST

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and the Town of Babylon recently sponsored a free Senior ID Card Program for Town of Bablyon residents at the Rainbow Senior Center in Lindenhurst. 

     The program allowed Town of Babylon residents ages 60 and over to obtain a free wallet-sized senior ID card. The card includes their photo and personal data, physician’s contact information, and emergency contact phone numbers which could be useful to paramedics in a medical emergency.

      Following a New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) investigation which recovered $386 million in unpaid life insurance benefits for New Yorkers, Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is informing residents how they can check and see if they are entitled to unpaid life insurance benefits. 

     “There are hundreds of millions of dollars in unpaid life insurance benefits which are owed to New York families. Using the Department of Financial Services’ free lost policy finder, families can find out more about these benefits and see if they may be entitled to unpaid funds,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO THANKS RESIDENTS FOR SAFELY DISPOSING OF NEARLY 1,000 POUNDS OF UNWANTED MEDICATION THROUGH “SHED THE MEDS” PROGRAM

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today thanked the over 400 residents from across the south shore who participated in his recent “Shed the Meds” program. The program collected nearly 1,000 pounds of expired and unwanted medications for safe disposal.

     “Safely disposing of medication helps to prevent pollution and keep it out of the hands of children and others who would use it improperly. That’s exactly what ‘Shed the Meds’ allows residents to do. Through the efforts of all the residents who participated, nearly 1,000 pounds of medications were kept out of the waterways and off the streets,” said Senator Fuschillo (R-Merrick).
