LI Herald: Legislator wants autism treatments covered

State Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr., a Republican from Merrick, has introduced legislation to ensure that people with autism receive insurance coverage for the screening, diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders.

Currently, those with autism are routinely denied insurance benefits for the treatment of their disorder, forcing their families to pay for costly treatments.

FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES FINAL LEGISLATIVE APPROVAL OF LEGISLATION ASSISTING PEOPLE WITH LYMPHEDEMA

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) announced that the State Senate has approved legislation he sponsors that will make information about lymphatic diseases more readily available to New Yorkers suffering from these diseases. The State Assembly has also passed the bill which now goes to Governor Paterson for consideration. Senator Fuschillo, said, “A diagnosis of lymphedema can be frightening and confusing. Many people are unfamiliar with the symptoms and recommended treatments.

SENATE APPROVES SENATOR FUSCHILLO’S LEGISLATION TO ENSURE INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM RECEIVE INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR TREATMENTS AND THERAPIES

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate passed legislation he sponsored to ensure individuals with autism are able to receive insurance coverage for applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapy as intended under New York State’s autism insurance reform law.

     The legislation is in response to regulations implemented by the New York State Department of Financial Services which have dramatically limited the number of ABA practitioners where individuals with autism can receive therapy which is covered by insurance.
