Will Be Introducing New Legislation to Raise Penalties for BUI & Require Greater Safety Training

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that he will be introducing new boating safety legislation to make our waterways safer for boaters. The legislation would raise the penalties for Boating Under the Influence (BUI) and require safety training for anyone who operates a boat. Michelle Mannino, whose husband Christopher was killed by another boater accused of BWI, the Nassau County Police Department’s Marine Bureau, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, and Assemblyman David McDonough joined Senator Fuschillo in calling for stronger laws.

Senator Fuschillo Calls for Stronger BUI Laws

News 12 Long Island story (7/19/12) on Senator Fuschillo's legislation to strengthen the New York's Boating Under the Influence (BUI) laws.

The legislation would create parity with the state's existing DWI laws by creating felony charges for operating a boat drunk with a child onboard and an "aggravated BWI" charge for high BAC offenders. Additionally, it would require mandatory driver license and boating privilege suspensions for BUI and DUI offenders, as well as require all boaters to complete a boating safety course.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO: GOVERNOR CUOMO SHOULD SIGN LEGISLATION TO STRENGTHEN NEW YORK’S BOATING SAFETY LAWS

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today urged Governor Andrew Cuomo to sign legislation he cosponsored which would strengthen New York’s boating safety laws by requiring individuals to obtain a boating safety certificate before operating a vessel.

     “This legislation is a step in the right direction that will improve safety for everyone on the water. Learning about basic safety procedures, navigation, and rules of the water before operating a powerful motor vehicle that can injure or kill someone is just commonsense. Governor Cuomo should sign this legislation to make our waterways safer,” said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES SIGNING OF NEW BOATING SAFETY LAW

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that legislation he cosponsored to strengthen New York’s boating safety laws has been signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The law will require individuals to obtain a boating safety certificate before operating a vessel.

     “Individuals should learn basic safety procedures, navigation, and the rules of the water before operating a powerful motor vehicle which can kill or seriously injure someone. Enacting this law is a step in the right direction which will make our waterways safer for everyone. I applaud Governor Cuomo for signing this legislation,” said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee.
