Property Tax Exemption Workshop- Freeport

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano will be sponsoring a Property Tax Exemption Workshop on Friday, July 12th from 1 pm to 3 pm at the Freeport Library (144 West Merrick Road, Freeport).

     Exemption specialists from the Nassau County Department of Assessment will be equipped with computers linked to the county’s database, and property tax exemption applications for Basic STAR, Enhanced STAR, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, veterans, volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians will be processed. County staffers will also provide assistance and answer any questions residents have about these exemptions.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO: DMV WOULD RECEIVE NEW TOOLS TO FIGHT FRAUD UNDER LEGISLATION PASSED BY STATE SENATE

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate gave final legislative passage to legislation he sponsored to give the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) stronger tools to combat fraud. The legislation would allow DMV to impose sanctions on drivers who try obtain a driver's license or vehicle registration for free through a "charge back" fraud scheme.

     Under the “charge back” fraud scheme, an individual pays for their driver’s license or registration using a credit, then disputes the charge with their credit card company to get a “charge back” on their account. By fraudulently disputing a valid DMV charge, these individuals illegally obtain their driver’s license or registration free of charge.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO SPONSORS LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION HONORING LINDENHURST EAGLE SCOUT

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate passed a legislative resolution he sponsored honoring Lindenhurst resident Kevin Schmidt for attaining the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout.

     Kevin, a member of Troop 183, attained boy scouting’s highest honor after spending years rising through scouting’s rank through hard work and community service. Kevin also planned, developed, and implemented a community service project. For his project, Kevin demolished and disposed of an old shelter used to house an injured eagle at Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown. Kevin then constructed and installed a brand new eagle shelter that will house the injured bird.

SENATE APPROVES SENATOR FUSCHILLO’S LEGISLATION TO ENSURE INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM RECEIVE INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR TREATMENTS AND THERAPIES

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate passed legislation he sponsored to ensure individuals with autism are able to receive insurance coverage for applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapy as intended under New York State’s autism insurance reform law.

     The legislation is in response to regulations implemented by the New York State Department of Financial Services which have dramatically limited the number of ABA practitioners where individuals with autism can receive therapy which is covered by insurance.

SENATE PASSES FUSCHILLO RESOLUTION HONORING MASSAPEQUA’S NEWEST EAGLE SCOUTS

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed legislative resolutions he sponsored honoring Massapequa residents Michael Puleio, Spencer Schiappa, Ryan Smith, Lawrence Vedilago, and Timothy Duerr for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.

     “After working hard for many years dedicating hours and hours to serving the community, these five young men achieved a goal that only a select few ever attain; the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. I congratulate them on earning this honor and am pleased that their accomplishments were recognized by the New York State Senate,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO AND COUNTY EXECUTIVE MANGANO SPONSOR FREE SENIOR ID CARD PROGRAM IN FREEPORT

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano recently sponsored a free Senior ID Card Program in Freeport.

     The program offered seniors ages 65 or older a free wallet-sized ID card which includes a photo, the holder’s personal contact information (name, address, phone number, date of birth), and an emergency contact name and phone number which could be useful to emergency responders. Seniors can carry the card in their wallet so that emergency responders will know who to contact if the senior is in an emergency situation and cannot communicate.

SENATE APPROVES LEGISLATION TO PREVENT CRIMINALS FROM ESCAPING JUSTICE THROUGH LEGAL NAME CHANGES

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that legislation he sponsored to prevent criminals from avoiding the justice system by changing their name has been passed by the New York State Senate.

     “It is far too easy for convicted criminals to avoid the legal system and hide their criminal histories simply by changing their name. Stronger safeguards need to be put in place so these criminals cannot conceal their past and hide from the law,” said Senator Fuschillo.

     Courts across the state receive change of name petitions each day. However, because of the routine nature of these applications, many courts approve them without thoroughly verifying the applicant’s information.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO CONGRATULATES COPIAGUE STUDENTS FOR PARTICIPATING IN SENATE’S EARTH DAY POSTER CONTEST

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently visited Copiague Middle School to congratulate 6th grade students Natalia Kacala and Claudia Arevalo for participating in the Senate’s Earth Day Poster Contest.

     Both Natalia and Claudia’s entries focused on the importance of “reducing, reusing, and recycling” in order to protect the environment. Natalia’s entry was chosen as a first place winner in the contest and was displayed in the State Legislative Office Building in Albany along with those of the other winners from across the state.

KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WORKS IN SENATOR FUSCHILLO’S OFFICE AS PART OF KENNEDY’S “SENIOR EXPERIENCE” PROGRAM

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick, pictured right) recently welcomed Kennedy High School Senior, and Merrick resident, Adam Samowitz (pictured left) to spend several weeks working in his district office as part of Kennedy’s “Senior Experience” program.

     Kennedy’s “Senior Experience” program is a progressive, hands-on program that allows graduating seniors to work with professionals in a field of their choice. During the course of the program, students learn about the day-to-day responsibilities and challenges in the chosen field, while gaining knowledge of the particular requirements involved.
