SENATOR FUSCHILLO AND COUNTY EXECUTIVE MANGANO TO SPONSOR FREE SENIOR ID CARD PROGRAM IN WANTAGH

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano will be sponsoring a free Senior ID Card Program in Wantagh.

     The program will be held from 12:00 pm- 3:00 pm on Friday, May 31st at the Wantagh Public Library, located at 3285 Park Avenue in Wantagh. All Nassau County residents ages 65 and over are eligible to participate and receive a free senior ID card. No appointments are necessary.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO SPONSORS FREE CHILD SAFETY SEAT CHECK IN MASSAPEQUA PARK

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently sponsored a free child safety seat check where parents could have their children’s car seats checked for proper installation. The program was held at John Burns Park in Massapequa Park.

     Officials from the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board performed the free safety inspections and fixed any seats that were improperly installed. Parents were also informed of the steps they should take to make sure their child’s car seat is used properly in the future.

SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE HOLDS PUBLIC HEARING EXAMINING HOW TO BETTER PROTECT CHILDREN FROM DRUNK SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS

     The New York State Senate’s Transportation Committee, chaired by Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), today held a public hearing to examine how New York State can better protect children from drunk bus drivers, including whether school buses should be equipped with ignition interlocks.

     The hearing follows at least four incidents on Long Island since last October in which drivers were arrested for operating a school bus while intoxicated, including one in which the driver crashed his bus with five young students onboard into a Syosset home. Melissa Escudero, whose son Christian was a passenger on the bus, testified at the hearing.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF PFC JOSEPH DWYER PTSD VETERANS COUNSELING PROGRAM TO NASSAU COUNTY

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently announced the creation of a peer to peer veterans counseling program in Nassau County to help veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Senator Fuschillo joined with Senator Dean Skelos, Senator Lee Zeldin, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, and local veterans in announcing funding for the PFC Joseph Dwyer Program, which was included in the 2013-2014 state budget.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO CONGRATULATES MERRICK RESIDENT ON APPOINTMENT TO STATE TOBACCO USE PREVENTION AND CONTROL ADVISORY BOARD

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently congratulated Merrick resident Marc Hamroff on being appointed to the New York State Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Advisory Board. Mr. Hamroff was appointed to the Advisory Board by Senate Majority Coalition Leader Dean Skelos at the recommendation of Senator Fuschillo.

     The New York State Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Advisory Board’s role is to advise the State Commissioner of Health on tobacco use prevention and control issues, including methods to prevent and reduce tobacco use in the state.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO INFORMS RESIDENTS HOW THEY CAN TRACK THE STATUS OF THEIR INCOME TAX REFUNDS

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is informing residents who believe they are entitled to a state and/or federal tax refund that they can track the status of their refund online by visiting his website, Fuschillo.nysenate.gov.

Both the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) have online tracking systems which allow residents whose income tax returns indicated they will be receiving a refund to find out when they can expect to receive it.

SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE APPROVES LEGISLATION REQUIRING MANDATORY JAIL TIME FOR REPEAT DWI OFFENDERS

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that the New York State Senate’s Transportation Committee has approved legislation he sponsors to require mandatory jail sentences for repeat DWI offenders.

     “Drunk driving is a choice, and choices have consequences. The consequence for choosing to repeatedly drive drunk should be that you go to jail, period. Mandatory jail sentences would create a stronger deterrent which would make DWI offenders think twice before getting behind the wheel drunk again and give law enforcement stronger tools to get repeat offenders off the road,” said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee.

SENATE PASSES SENATOR FUSCHILLO’S LEGISLATION TO COLLECT DELINQUENT CHILD SUPPORT PAYMENTS

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate passed legislation he sponsored to ensure that parents make their child support payments.

     Legislation (S4246) would allow New York State to continue to suspend the driver’s licenses of parents who fail to pay child support. Under the driver’s license suspension process, the state identifies parents who failed to pay child support and have a driver’s license. These individuals are then notified that their license will be suspended unless they make their child support payments.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO’S LEGISLATION TO STRENGTHEN PENALTIES FOR SHOPLIFTERS PASSED BY SENATE

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate passed legislation he sponsored to raise penalties for criminals who use “booster bags” and other anti-security devices to steal merchandise from store shelves.

     “Thieves are using ‘booster bags’ to steal billions of dollars of merchandise from stores every year. Ultimately, law abiding consumers get stuck paying for these illegal shopping sprees through higher prices. Stronger laws are needed to deter individuals from using these devices to plunder store shelves and provide law enforcement greater tools to prosecute thieves,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO, SENATOR HANNON, AND COUNTY EXECUTIVE MANGANO SPONSOR FREE SENIOR ID CARD PROGRAM IN FARMINGDALE

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City), and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano recently sponsored a free Senior ID Card Program in Farmingdale.

     The program offered seniors ages 65 or older a free wallet-sized ID card which includes a photo, the holder’s personal contact information (name, address, phone number, date of birth), and an emergency contact name and phone number which could be useful to emergency responders. Seniors can carry the card in their wallet so that emergency responders will know who to contact if the senior is in an emergency situation and cannot communicate.

LEGISLATION TO CLOSE LEGAL LOOPHOLE IN NEW YORK’S DUI LAWS PASSED BY SENATE

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that the Senate has approved legislation he sponsored to close a legal loophole which allows some intoxicated drivers to escape prosecution for DUI.

     Currently, individuals can only be charged with a DUI offense if they are intoxicated or impaired by alcohol or one of the drugs listed in the public health law. Those who ingest substances not listed in the law (such as inhaling an aerosol can) can escape being charged with DUI.
