SENATOR FUSCHILLO: DEPARTMENT OF FINANCIAL SERVICES STAFF COMING TO LONG ISLAND THIS WEEK TO ASSIST SUPERSTORM SANDY VICTIMS

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is informing residents that New York State is deploying the Department of Financial Services’ Mobile Command Center to Long Island this week to help Superstorm Sandy victims with insurance claims, mortgage relief and other issues.

     According to the Department of Financial Services, the Mobile Command Center will be at the following locations:

     Thursday, October 31st

     9 am to 5 pm

     Freeport Memorial Library

     144 West Merrick Road, Freeport

SENATOR FUSCHILLO: NEW DISTRACTED DRIVING LAW FOR COMMERCIAL DRIVERS TAKE EFFECT MONDAY

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the New York State Senate’s Transportation Committee, is reminding residents that a stronger distracted driving law for commercial drivers take effect this Monday, October 28th.

     “Distracted drivers jeopardize the safety of everyone on the road. It’s even more dangerous when the driver is operating a commercial vehicle that is significantly larger, heavier, and more powerful than most others on the road. This new law will help ensure that commercial drivers focus on the road, not their cell phone, when they are behind the wheel,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO: NEW LAW TO STRENGTHEN NEW YORK STATE’S DROP-SIDE CRIB BAN TAKES EFFECT SUNDAY

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that a new law authored to strengthen New York State’s ban on dangerous drop-side cribs takes effect this Sunday, October 27th. The law, which was signed by Governor Cuomo on September 27th, expands the state’s existing drop-side crib ban to prohibit drop-side cribs from being used at day care centers and child-care facilities and ensures that New York’s law conforms with federal regulations.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES $815 MILLION TO HELP LONG ISLAND CONTINUE TO RECOVER FROM SUPERSTORM SANDY

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that Long Island will be receiving $815 million in funding for several critical Superstorm Sandy recovery and rebuilding infrastructure projects. The projects include upgrading Long Island’s utility system, strengthening vulnerable bridges for future severe weather, and rehabilitating wastewater treatment plants. 

     “Securing this additional funding is good news for Long Island. This is another step forward in our ongoing efforts to recover from Superstorm Sandy and will help ensure that our area is better prepared for future storms,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO REMINDS RESIDENTS TO REGISTER WITH NEW YORK STATE TO CONTINUE RECEIVING BASIC STAR EXEMPTION

    Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is reminding residents who currently receive the Basic STAR exemption that they must register with New York State in order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and future years. The registration requirement is part of a new initiative to ensure that tax dollars are not wasted on inappropriate or fraudulent STAR exemptions.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO & SUFFOLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SPONSOR FREE SENIOR ID CARD PROGRAM FOR DOMINICAN VILLAGE RESIDENTS

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office recently sponsored a free senior ID card program for the residents of Dominican Village in Amityville. 

     Through the program, residents were able to receive a free wallet-sized ID cards with their name, photo, contact information, and pertinent medical history. The card can be useful to paramedics in the event of a medical emergency.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO HONORED BY MEPHAM HIGH SCHOOL

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) was recently honored by students and staff at Mepham High School for securing state funding to make safety improvements at the school. 

     Senator Fuschillo secured state funding to replace the visitors bleachers at the school’s football field. The old wooden bleachers were worn and rotted in many sections, posing a safety hazard to parents and children. Using the funding secured by Senator Fuschillo, the school was able to install new, safer aluminum bleachers.

     With this Sunday marking the start of National Teen Driver Safety Week, Senator Charles J. National Teen Driver Safety Week, which this year runs from October 20th-26th, was established to help educate young people about the risks of distracted driving and the importance of practicing safe driving habits.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO & ASSEMBLYMAN CURRAN TO SPONSOR BREAST CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM IN FREEPORT

     New York State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Assemblyman Brian Curran (R-Lynbrook), in conjunction with NuHealth/Nassau Health Care Corporation, will be sponsoring a breast cancer screening program on Tuesday, November 12th from 8:45 am to 12:00 pm at the Freeport Library (144 West Merrick Road, Freeport). 

     Appointments are necessary and will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. On site nurses and technicians will provide a mammography, a clinical breast examination and instructions for self examination. Patients and their physicians will be notified of the exam results.

SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE HOLDS PUBLIC HEARING ON MTA’S FINANCES

     The New York State Senate Transportation Committee today held a public hearing on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) finances. 

     “The MTA has a budget of over $13 billion. Fare payers deserve to know how the MTA is spending that money. Through this hearing, the Committee heard directly from the MTA leadership about its current financial state, measures it is taking to improve service and efficiency, and how it plans to lower its costs and make using the MTA more affordable for riders and drivers,” said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee.
