      Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Assemblyman David G. McDonough (North Merrick) recently congratulated the North Bellmore-North Merrick Lady Rebels Softball Team on winning the New York State Championship. 

     The Lady Rebels captured the New York State Championship in the 9-10 year old division after winning the South Shore District Championship and the Long Island Championship.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION OF NEW OCEAN PARKWAY SHARED-USE PATH

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) has started construction on the new Ocean Parkway Coastal Greenway, a 3.6 mile shared-use path (SUP) between Jones Beach State Park and Tobay Beach. The $3.8 million project will provide vital links for bicyclists and pedestrians between the widely utilized Wantagh Shared Use Path, Jones Beach, and Tobay Beach.

SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING ON MTA’S FINANCES

      Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the New York State Senate’s Transportation Committee, announced that the committee will be holding a public hearing on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) finances. The hearing will provide the Committee with an update on the MTA’s capital spending plan and operating budget as they pertain to each MTA agency.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO: VETERANS CAN NOW GET “VETERANS” DESIGNATION ON DRIVER’S LICENSES AND NON-DRIVER ID CARDS

New Law Makes it Easier for Veterans to Verify Their Status

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced today that a law he supported allowing the state Department of Motor  Vehicles (DMV) to place a distinguishing mark on a driver's license or non-driver ID to indicate its holder is a veteran is now in effect. The law makes it easier for individuals to show proof that they are a veteran.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES NEW LAW TO PROTECT INDIVIDUALS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

      Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that legislation he supported to protect individuals with developmental disabilities has been signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo. 

     The legislation allocates up to $90 million in funding for the State’s Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) nonprofit providers to cover any funding shortages that result from recommendations developed by the OPWDD work group. The OPWDD work group was created in response to reductions in federal aid funding to develop a cost savings plan without compromising the quality of care patients receive.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES NEW LAW TO PREVENT MINORS FROM ABUSING DXM

New Law Prohibits Sale of DXM to Children Under Age 18

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently announced that legislation he supported to prohibit pharmacies and stores from selling Dextromethorphan (DXM) to children under the age of 18 without a prescription has been signed into law by Governor Cuomo. Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a substance commonly found in over-the-counter cold medications and can cause serious health risks if abused.

     With today marking the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is encouraging women to be safe and get screened.

     “Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among women, but early detection improves the chances that it can be treated successfully,” said Senator Fuschillo. “Getting screened is an important step that women should take to protect their health.”

SENATOR FUSCHILLO & ASSEMBLYMAN MCDONOUGH HONOR MERRICK RESIDENT ON BECOMING AN EAGLE SCOUT

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Assemblyman David McDonough (R-North Merrick) recently honored Merrick resident Alexander Eagen on earning the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. 

     The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest honor a Boy Scout can receive. Only 7 percent of all Boy Scouts earned the rank of Eagle Scout last year, according to Boy Scouts of America. Making this honor even more special is the fact that Alex was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder at an early age. As a result, he had to work extra hard to learn all the skills that a scout needs to know.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES NEW LAW TO STRENGTHEN NEW YORK STATE’S DROP-SIDE CRIB BAN

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently announced that legislation he sponsored to strengthen New York State’s ban on dangerous drop-side cribs has been signed into law by Governor Cuomo. The law expands the state’s existing drop-side crib ban to prohibit drop-side cribs from being used at child-care facilities and other places of public accommodation and ensures that New York’s law conforms with federal regulations.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is inviting residents to participate in an online Q & A session he is holding on Tuesday, October 8th. The session will be held from 7-8 pm on Senator Fuschillo’s website, fuschillo.nysenate.gov. 

“This online Q & A session allows residents to participate in a town hall style meeting from the convenience of their home or office,” said Senator Fuschillo. “Everyone is invited to submit questions and then watch the session.”

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES SIGNING OF NEW BOATING SAFETY LAW

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that legislation he cosponsored to strengthen New York’s boating safety laws has been signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The law will require individuals to obtain a boating safety certificate before operating a vessel.

     “Individuals should learn basic safety procedures, navigation, and the rules of the water before operating a powerful motor vehicle which can kill or seriously injure someone. Enacting this law is a step in the right direction which will make our waterways safer for everyone. I applaud Governor Cuomo for signing this legislation,” said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES NEW LAW TO STRENGTHEN ENFORCEMENT OF CIGARETTE SHIPPING LAW

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that legislation he sponsored to strengthen enforcement of New York State’s law against shipping cigarettes has been signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The new law closes a loophole which allowed individuals caught illegally shipping cigarettes through a law enforcement “sting” operation to escape prosecution.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO REQUESTS INFORMATION FROM DMV FOLLOWING DRIVER LICENSE CHEATING SCAM

Following reports that individuals cheated on their commercial driver's license exam by bribing DMV security guards, Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the New York State Senate's Transportation Committee, called on the DMV Commissioner to provide information as to how DMV is responding to the scam. Senator Fuschillo requested that the Commissioner inform the Committee about the steps DMV is taking to prevent future security breaches and find other drivers who obtained commercial driver's licenses through this fraud.
