SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES LIRR TO RESUME FULL RUSH HOUR SERVICE ON MONDAY

New York State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, today announced that the Long Island Rail Road will resume full rush hour service this Monday, December 10th. This marks the first time since Hurricane Sandy that the Long Island Rail Road is operating at full service capacity.

    Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Long Island Cares, and Mayor Andrew Hardwick and the Village of Freeport will be partnering together in sponsoring a free mobile food distribution program in Freeport to help residents affected by Hurricane Sandy. 

    The program will take place on Thursday, December 6th from 11 am to 2 pm at the corner of Woodcleft Avenue and Front Street at the beginning of the Nautical Mile in Freeport.  Thousands of pounds of food, water, and supplies will be brought in to serve the victims of Hurricane Sandy who are in need. 

     Residents will be able to obtain the following items free of charge:

SENATOR FUSCHILLO CALLS ON THRUWAY AUTHORITY TO REJECT TOLL INCREASE

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. is calling on the New York State Thruway Authority Board to reject a proposed 45 percent increase in commercial tolls.

     “The New York State Thruway Authority’s proposed 45 percent increase in tolls is ill-timed, insensitive, and shows that they are completely out of touch with the challenges facing New York. The proposed increase should be rejected immediately,” said Senator Fuschillo (R-Merrick).

     Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, stated that the Thruway Authority's proposed increased would have a devastating impact on New Yorkers and called on the Thruway Board to reject any idea of toll increases.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO REMINDS NASSAU RESIDENTS THAT PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION FILING PERIOD IS UNDERWAY

Residents Have Until January 2nd to Apply for STAR & Other Property Tax Exemptions

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is reminding Nassau County residents that the County is currently accepting applications for New York State’s School Tax Relief (STAR) program and other property tax exemptions. Applications must be filed by January 2nd.

     The STAR program works in two parts:

     • Basic STAR is available to all New Yorkers who own and live in their own home, condominium, or cooperative apartment whose adjusted gross income does not exceed $500,000, regardless of age.

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently joined with Freeport Mayor Andrew Hardwick and Village of Freeport employees and volunteers at the Freeport Recreation Center to help families in need.

     Senator Fuschillo joined Mayor Hardwick and Village of Freeport employees and volunteers in providing free Thanksgiving turkeys and non-perishable food to residents in need. Senator Fuschillo worked with Governor Cuomo’s office to bring turkeys to Freeport.

     “Many Freeport families are still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy. This program is another way to lend a helping hand to these families and make these trying times a little easier for them,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO MEETS WITH MASSAPEQUA CUB SCOUTS

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently welcomed Cub Scouts from Pack 696 to his Massapequa Office. The scouts, who are all 4th grade students at Birch Lane Elementary School, met with Senator Fuschillo to learn about “citizenship in the community.”

     Senator Fuschillo talked to the scouts about his job as a New York State Senator, how new laws are made, and the importance of becoming involved in their community. He also listened to the scouts’ ideas for new laws and answered questions about how government works.

     The scouts who met with Senator Fuschillo are Daniel Siani, Scott Friske, Jack Garofalo, J.J. Vogt, Sean Buchanan, Kieran Winthrop, and Joshua Johnson.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO INFORMS RESIDENTS HOW TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM HOME REPAIR SCAMS AFTER HURRICANE SANDY

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is informing homeowners who sustained damage during Hurricane Sandy about precautions they should take to avoid falling victim to home repair scams.

     Senator Fuschillo offered the following tips, which are provided by the New York State Division of Consumer Protection, to residents who need to repair storm damage to their homes:

     • Avoid unlicensed contractors in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, where contractors are required to have a license. Unlicensed contractors are operating illegally in those areas;

     • Avoid contractors who show up at your doorstep unannounced or contact you through telemarketing;
