Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) is reminding residents who currently receive the Basic STAR exemption that they must register with New York State in order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and future years. The registration requirement is part of a new initiative to ensure that tax dollars are not wasted on inappropriate or fraudulent STAR exemptions.
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office recently sponsored a free senior ID card program for the residents of Dominican Village in Amityville.
Through the program, residents were able to receive a free wallet-sized ID cards with their name, photo, contact information, and pertinent medical history. The card can be useful to paramedics in the event of a medical emergency.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) was recently honored by students and staff at Mepham High School for securing state funding to make safety improvements at the school.
Senator Fuschillo secured state funding to replace the visitors bleachers at the school’s football field. The old wooden bleachers were worn and rotted in many sections, posing a safety hazard to parents and children. Using the funding secured by Senator Fuschillo, the school was able to install new, safer aluminum bleachers.

With this Sunday marking the start of National Teen Driver Safety Week, Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, is reminding families about the dangers of distracted driving. National Teen Driver Safety Week, which this year runs from October 20th-26th, was established to help educate young people about the risks of distracted driving and the importance of practicing safe driving habits.

New York State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Assemblyman Brian Curran (R-Lynbrook), in conjunction with NuHealth/Nassau Health Care Corporation, will be sponsoring a breast cancer screening program on Tuesday, November 12th from 8:45 am to 12:00 pm at the Freeport Library (144 West Merrick Road, Freeport).
Appointments are necessary and will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. On site nurses and technicians will provide a mammography, a clinical breast examination and instructions for self examination. Patients and their physicians will be notified of the exam results.

The New York State Senate Transportation Committee today held a public hearing on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) finances.
“The MTA has a budget of over $13 billion. Fare payers deserve to know how the MTA is spending that money. Through this hearing, the Committee heard directly from the MTA leadership about its current financial state, measures it is taking to improve service and efficiency, and how it plans to lower its costs and make using the MTA more affordable for riders and drivers,” said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) has started construction on the new Ocean Parkway Coastal Greenway, a 3.6 mile shared-use path (SUP) between Jones Beach State Park and Tobay Beach. The $3.8 million project will provide vital links for bicyclists and pedestrians between the widely utilized Wantagh Shared Use Path, Jones Beach, and Tobay Beach.

New Law Makes it Easier for Veterans to Verify Their Status
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced today that a law he supported allowing the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to place a distinguishing mark on a driver's license or non-driver ID to indicate its holder is a veteran is now in effect. The law makes it easier for individuals to show proof that they are a veteran.
