        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and Assemblyman Joseph Saladino (R-Massapequa) recently welcomed Eagle Scout Anthony Clemente, Jr. of Massapequa to the State Capitol.

        Anthony, a senior at Massapequa High School and a member of Troop 776, was in Albany to view a working session of the State Legislature.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO SUPPORTS LEGISLATION TO EXPEDITE PAYMENT OF STATE INCOME TAX REFUNDS

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed legislation he supports to ensure that residents receive their state income tax refunds as quickly as possible.

        “Tax refunds belong to taxpayers, not the government. Someone who files on-time and is entitled to a refund deserves to have their money returned to them in a timely fashion. That’s even more important in this economy, when so many families are trying to do more with less. Under this legislation, that’s exactly what would happen,” said Senator Fuschillo.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO & TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD SPONSOR FREE SENIOR ID PROGRAM IN WANTAGH

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently partnered with Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla and Supervisor Kate Murray in sponsoring a free Senior I.D. Card Program at the Wantagh Library.

        The program enabled Town of Hempstead seniors to receive free wallet-sized photo ID cards that could be helpful in case of an emergency. The senior ID cards contain the cardholder’s emergency contact numbers, physician’s contact information, allergies, and other vital information that could be useful to paramedics in a medical emergency. Nearly 100 local seniors received free ID cards through the program.

SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE APPROVES LEGISLATION RAISING PENALTIES FOR HIT AND RUN DRIVERS

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee today announced that the committee has passed legislation which would raise penalties for drivers who hit and run. 

        "Drivers who flee the scene of an accident show no regard for the welfare of others. It's a heartless crime that deserves a tougher penalty. This legislation will give prosecutors stronger tools to take hit and run drivers off the roads," said Senator Fuschillo.

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) will be partnering with Town of Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla and Supervisor Kate Murray in sponsoring two community programs in North Merrick on Friday, April 27th.

        The Senior ID Card and Passport Programs will both be held at the North Merrick Library, located at 1691 Meadowbrook Road in North Merrick, from 1-4 pm.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO CONGRATULATES FARMINGDALE STATE COLLEGE ON ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently congratulated Farmingdale State College on reaching its 100th anniversary.

        Senator Fuschillo presented Farmingdale State College President Dr. Hubert Keen with a legislative resolution he sponsored commemorating the milestone event. The resolution was recently passed by the New York State Senate.

        Established on April 15, 1912, Farmingdale State College is the oldest public college on Long Island. With 37 different degree programs and an enrollment of over 7,000 students, it has grown into one of Long Island’s premier institutions for higher education.

SENATE PASSES FUSCHILLO RESOLUTION HONORING THE MEMORY OF MERRICK RESIDENT WALTER MINTZ

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Senate recently passed a legislative resolution honoring the memory of longtime Merrick resident and former Merrick Library Board President Walter Mintz, who recently passed away at the age of 82.

        “Walter Mintz cared deeply about the Merrick community and served it tirelessly for many years. Whether it was helping children through the Kiwanis Club or working on behalf of his beloved Merrick Library, he left a lasting impact on our community. I’m pleased that the Senate paid tribute to his memory and many years of devoted service,” said Senator Fuschillo, who sponsored the legislative resolution.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO SPONSORS PROGRAM TO SHOW DANGERS OF DISTRACTED DRIVING

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently sponsored a program to illustrate the dangers of distracted driving. The program, which Senator Fuschillo sponsored in conjunction with the New York State Police and Nationwide Insurance, helped reinforce the dangers of texting or talking on the phone behind the wheel.

        “Distracted driving endangers lives and jeopardizes safety on our roadways. Far too many people have lost their lives or been injured in crashes caused by distracted driving,” said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee. “Raising awareness through this program will help reinforce the message that distracted driving is dangerous and deadly.”

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES STATEWIDE BAN ON SYNTHETIC MARIJUANA

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently announced that the sale of synthetic marijuana has been banned throughout New York State.

        Known as the “legal alternative” to marijuana, synthetic marijuana was primarily sold in convenience stores, smoke shops and tobacco stores. Since it is easily accessible and relatively affordable, synthetic marijuana is extremely attractive to young people.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO: STATE BUDGET INCLUDES FUNDING FOR JONES BEACH IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the recently approved New York State Budget contains $11.75 million in funding to make improvements at Jones Beach.

        The $11.75 million improvement project will help rehabilitate the West bathhouse building and swimming pool, the Jones Beach boardwalk, and electrical and water systems at the Park. The project is part of the New York Works program.

Quilt Display As Part of April “Autism Spectrum Disorders Awareness Month”

        Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently partnered with Autism Speaks in helping raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorders.

        Senator Fuschillo arranged for quilts made by Austism Speaks to be displayed in the State Legislative Office Building in Albany for three weeks as part of Autism Awareness Month. Merrick resident Michael Giangregorio, the father of an Autistic child and Autism Speaks’ Long Island Volunteer Executive Chair, helped Senator Fuschillo coordinate the quilt display.
