A reality television celebrity accompanied three teenage girls to Albany last Tuesday to meet with legislators and advocate for a bill that would prohibit the use of plastic foam in food service.

Jill Zarin of the Bravo network's "The Real Housewives of New York City," along with her daughter Allyson Shapiro and two other New York high school girls, is advocating for a bill (S.747-a/A.706-a) that would enact the Food Service Waste Reduction Act.

NEWSDAY: State weighs tax relief for Ponzi scheme losses

The state will soon offer some relief for investors who lost money in Ponzi schemes by adopting tax policies similar to those issued by the Internal Revenue Service in March.

The state's Department of Taxation and Finance is still developing the new guidelines, but the agency is expecting to publish them in a few weeks, a spokesman said.

A bill that would eliminate the term “Oriental” from official state documents passed the Senate on July 20 and is now awaiting the governor’s signature.

The measure, sponsored by Sen. Craig Johnson, D-Port Washington, and Assemblywoman Grace Meng, D-Flushing, would rid the word from state documents, citing it as “insensitive, outdated and derogatory,” according to a statement from the senator’s office.

Westbury Times: Controversial Billboard on Cherry Lane Trellis Removed

The controversial Celleno & Barnes billboard located on the Cherry Lane trellis was removed Aug. 20.

Last month, Senator Craig Johnson joined with Carle Place residents to oppose the advertisement on the grounds that it was a “disruptive eyesore” that distracted drivers, slowed traffic and was out of sync with the character of a residential community.
