Statement RE:Gov. Paterson's Decision to Not Seek a Full Term

"In deciding not to seek a full term, Governor Paterson made a responsible decision in the wake of the disturbing scandal that has consumed his office. Prior to these most recent allegations of domestic violence and abuse of power, I was the first member of the Long Island delegation to call for Governor Paterson to not run this November. I was concerned that politics were distracting him from the business of running the state.

Public Hearing: Joint Hearing on NYRA's Finances and viability of thoroughbred racing in New York State

 

In 2008, New York State provided the New York Racing Association (NYRA)

nearly $105 million in funding and forgave nearly $100 million in outstanding debt to enable the

association to emerge from bankruptcy and continue racing operations. After stating in mid-

2009 that it was financially stable, NYRA announced in December that unless a Video Lottery

Terminal (VLT) operator were selected shortly, the association would become insolvent. This

Statement by Senator Craig M. Johnson, (D-Nassau), the Senate Majority's Representative to the MTA Capital Program Review Board:

“In light of Acting Commissioner Gee's veto of the proposed 2010-2014 Capital Plan, I strongly recommend the MTA reassess its capital needs and present a better, balanced, and more responsible plan to the CPRB.  
A capital plan is important to our region -- not only to strengthen our mass transit infrastructure, but also because it would create construction jobs in a sector that is currently experiencing massive unemployment.
