By heeding our calls and formalizing the new middle school, DOE is helping to ensure the continued success of P.S. 8 and creating better options for all District 13 students. Now we must work to get the new P.S. 8 middle school ready to go for next school year and continue to work for more options for District 13 students.

ALBANY -- State Senator Daniel Squadron honored fallen New York Police Department Officer Alain Schaberger with a resolution on the Senate floor during yesterday's legislative session. Senator Squadron was joined by Officer Schaberger's parents, Paul and May Schaberger.

NEW YORK -- Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron released the following statement in response to the proposed district lines just released by the Senate Republicans:

Even though the worst of the Republican political shenanigans aren't impacting the district I represent as they are some of my colleagues' districts, the conclusion is undeniable: partisan redistricting is a poisonous process.  

Before the 2010 election, every member of the Senate majority pledged to create an independent redistricting process. Now they are breaking the pledge they made to the people and putting politics before their promise. It's no surprise that these politically motivated maps represent the same arrogance as their broken pledge: politicians choosing their constituents, so that constituents lose the power to choose their representatives.

As the Governor has said, any lines drawn in this process must not stand. Voters must make their voices heard now so that their votes can make a difference in November.

Senator Squadron Has Long Championed Funding for NFP, But Critical Program Faces $5 Million Shortfall

ALBANY -- State Senator Daniel Squadron welcomed New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's support for $5 million in state funding for Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) in testimony at today's Joint Legislative Public Hearing on the 2012-2013 Budget. 

NEW YORK -- State Senator Daniel Squadron (D-Chinatown) and Assemblymember Grace Meng (D-Flushing) are reiterating their call on the City to make the Asian Lunar New Year a school holiday. 

NEW YORK -- Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron submitted the attached testimony to the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) in support of the East 10th Street Historic District designation. 

"The block between Avenues A and B demonstrates the four-story scale that has been a trademark of the Lower East Side and East Village for over 100 years – and it would be a shame to jeopardize that history and architecture by not providing historic designation," said Senator Squadron.

Squadron-Kavanagh Legislation Would Ban Use of Non-Therapeutic Antibiotics In Animals Sold As Food

FDA Took Step in Right Direction By Restricting One Class of Antibiotics, Now NY Must Act

NEW YORK – State Senator Daniel Squadron and Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh are urging immediate passage of their bill to ban the use of antibiotics in animals sold for food in New York, as well as stronger federal regulations, after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it will restrict the use of a type of antibiotic used in livestock that may contribute to high drug resistance in humans. 

The routine, non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in animals meant for human consumption poses an unacceptable risk to public health, creating treatment-resistant bacterial infections.  For years, the FDA dragged its feet on the issue. That is why Senator Squadron and Assemblymember Kavanagh introduced legislation (S80 [Squadron] / A05582 [Kavanagh]) that would make New York a leader on food safety and prohibit the use of antibiotics in all farm animals sold for food in New York, except for the treatment of sick animals.

Last night, DOE answered the calls of the community and formally proposed the expansion of P.S. 8 to include a middle school. 

For months, I've worked with parents, P.S. 8 faculty, DOE, Assemblymember Millman and Councilmember Levin to make this proposal a reality. 

Providing our community with a high quality middle school is critical to continuing the success of P.S. 8. I urge quick approval of this proposal to get the middle school up and running by next school year and ensure that our kids get the the quality education they deserve.
