Only 44% of Lower East Side tenants report having lobby doors with working locks, and less than 50% say they live in buildings with working intercom systems

While $42 million for security cameras remains unspent, 80% of residents in buildings without cameras say they would feel safer with the surveillance technology

September 21, 2012, New York, NY – State Senator Daniel Squadron, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, and Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh today released a report, “Protecting NYCHA Communities,” that surveyed tenants’ concerns about public safety in ten New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments on the Lower East Side. The results show that residents often fear for their safety and that housing developments lack basic protections, including functional locks for buildings, reliable intercom systems and regular security patrols.

Squadron Statement on Lower East Side Pathmark's Impending Closure

NEW YORK -- Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron released the following statement regarding the impending closure of the Pathmark supermarket, located on Cherry Street on the Lower East Side:

"I'm deeply concerned about Pathmark's closure and what it means for an already-underserved Lower East Side. 

"Lower East Side residents need access to the full service food retailers, including fresh food, that most other New Yorkers can take for granted.

NEW YORK -- Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron released the following statement commemorating the one-year anniversary of the death of Pvt. Danny Chen:

"Today we remember and honor the life of Danny Chen. His tragedy and the experience he had serving our country is one that no person should ever have, and my thoughts and prayers remain with his family.

"That is why today, and everyday, we are also reminded that we must do everything in our power to prevent such tragedies from occurring again. If one member of our armed forces is hazing and bullying someone, it sullies the entire armed forces and our values as a nation -- and it simply should not be tolerated.

There’s considerable talk these days about bringing state legislators back to Albany for a special legislative session.

There are lots of issues out there for a special session — including a pay raise for legislators. But after dramatic bloodshed in New York City and across the country, there is one issue that seems to be falling through the cracks: gun violence. That’s why we must go back to Albany for a special session.
