BROOKLYN -- Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron released the following statement in response to the NYC Department of Education's proposal to expand P.S. 8 Robert Fulton to include a middle school:

Last night, DOE answered the calls of the community and formally proposed the expansion of P.S. 8 to include a middle school. 

For months, I've worked with parents, P.S. 8 faculty, DOE, Assemblymember Millman and Councilmember Levin to make this proposal a reality. 

Providing our community with a high quality middle school is critical to continuing the success of P.S. 8. I urge quick approval of this proposal to get the middle school up and running by next school year and ensure that our kids get the the quality education they deserve.

Tonight's vote to approve the new P.S. 8 middle school is great news for Brooklyn! By heeding our calls and formalizing the new middle school, DOE is helping to ensure the continued success of P.S. 8 and creating better options for all District 13 students. Now we must work to get the new P.S. 8 middle school ready to go for next school year and continue to work for more options for District 13 students.

BROOKLYN -- Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron released the following statement upon news of an agreement to allow NYU to build a Center for Urban Science and Progress at 370 Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn:

An applied sciences campus at 370 Jay Street is nothing short of a game-changer for Downtown Brooklyn and all of New York City. 

For years we've pushed to put 370 Jay to use, and, since last fall, we've urged an agreement that would allow NYU and NYU-Poly to build a Center for Urban Science and Progress in the space. 

Now, by bringing a world-class institute to Brooklyn, we'll be able to bring Brooklyn's dynamic talent and vibrant tech scene to the world. And by finally putting the nearly-abandoned 370 Jay to use, Downtown Brooklyn will take another huge step forward.

Electeds Urge Comprehensive Plan to Save Hospital and Medical School

BROOKLYN – Today, a coalition of Brooklyn elected officials sent a letter to Governor Cuomo urging immediate action to save critical services and medical training at the State University of New York’s Downstate Medical Center (Downstate) and its affiliates.

Downstate faces a major operating deficit, and a significant restructuring is necessary for the institution’s survival. Downstate’s Long Island College Hospital has already laid off 150 employees; over 400 more Downstate employees will receive contract-mandated notice of future layoffs this month, with over a thousand layoffs expected in the next year. This will lead to a massive cut in services and the ability to train medical professionals in Brooklyn.
