NEW YORK -- Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Assemblymembers Deborah Glick and Brian Kavanagh, Borough President Scott Stringer, and Councilmembers Margaret Chin and Rosie Mendez sent a letter to NYC Human Resources Administration Commissioner Robert Doar urging the City to make the Hurricane Sandy Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) more accessible to more New Yorkers in need. NEW YORK – Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron welcomed President Obama's plan to expand early childhood education, including by growing federal support for Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP).

Senator Squadron, the former chair of the Senate Social Services Committee, has long championed the expansion of NFP, a proven program that matches low-income first-time mothers with registered nurses for home visits throughout pregnancy until the child is two-years-old.

Senate Housing Committee Passes Squadron Bill to Make Mitchell-Lama Housing More Accessible

ALBANY -- Today, the NY State Senate Committee on Housing, Construction, and Community Development passed Senator Daniel Squadron's bill to make the Mitchell-Lama Housing Program more accessible to middle class families.

Current law stipulates that families with two or more dependents -- whose joint annual net income exceeds 100% but is below 125% of average median income (AMI) -- are eligible for Mitchell-Lama housing if they pay a rental surcharge. But by making this allowance available only to families with dependents, many families are excluded simply because they don’t have children.
