Statement by Senator David Carlucci on the Hudson River Boating Tragedy

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families of those involved in this devastating boating tragedy. Every New Yorker has been affected by this unimaginable loss.  

"While there is nothing we can do to change the course of events that transpired over this past weekend, we have an obligation to do everything in our power to try to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.  It is clear that more education and public awareness is sorely needed. Mandatory boat safety education will go along way toward informing boat operators and their passengers about the importance of safe operating procedures on New York's waterways.

“The state Public Service Commission will finally have a real opportunity to reexamine their initial case findings to see if a long-term water supply project is truly needed for Rockland County.  Since the proposed plan began, new information that would impact the county's water supply has been discovered, not to mention that there has never been a comprehensive study done on the cost effectiveness and alternatives to this plan.  While the cost of this project has more than doubled, consumers remain concerned over this project's final price tag.

Law prohibits smokers from exposing children to this harmful behavior 

(July 12, 2013) Assemblywoman Sandy Galef and Senator David Carlucci are pleased to announce the Governor’s approval of legislation meant to protect our state’s youth.  The newly signed law (A.4205/S1643-Chapter 102 of the Laws of New York 2013) will prohibit smoking at public playgrounds where children under twelve are present during the hours between sunrise and sunset.  This legislation would not prevent local municipalities from enacting or applying more rigorous anti-smoking policies.

Senator Carlucci Applauds the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) for Bringing Regional Centers of Excellence to Rockland County

Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester), Chairman of the Senate Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Committee, today offered praise upon the release of the long-awaited OMH Regional Centers of Excellence plan that continues its mission of de-institutionalizing care for people with mental illnesses.  The plan reforms existing bureaucracy and provides better community-based care and services as a more holistic approach.

NEW CITY  – Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester) will host a Weatherization and Energy Efficiency Workshop to offer residents tips on how to conserve energy and save money on their homes.  The workshop will be held in collaboration with the Association for Energy Affordability, Inc.  Experts will discuss a number of ways in which homeowners can conduct energy audits, learn about its environmental benefits, green building design and construction, and more.

Senator Carlucci Calls on the Public Service Commission to Reject Costly Rate Hike Proposal by United Water

NEW CITY  – Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester) today joined with Rockland residents to urge the state Public Service Commission (PSC) to formally reject United Water’s latest rate hike proposal dealt to its customers.   If allowed to proceed, by next June, this would saddle an average family of four with an annual increase of $144 dollars per year on their water bill.  This means that a family can see their total water bill payment skyrocket to an astonishing $880.71 annually.

Carlucci, Galef Urge Governor Cuomo to Sign Comprehensive Boating Safety Package into Law

OSSINING, NYSenator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester), Assemblywoman Sandy Galef(D-Westchester/Putnam), and other state and local officials today joined forces to urge the Governor to sign their legislation that will fundamentally change the way boating safety is implemented in New York State.  With summer finally here, the two state legislators were able to pass their bill through both chambers of the state legislature last week.  The effort is designed to educate individuals who currently do not possess boating knowledge to help prevent tragedies from unfolding, as was the case last summer in Long Island and along the Hudson River.

Senator Carlucci Presents Clarkstown South Student Alana Kurtti with $1,500 Scholarship Award

ALBANY – Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester) recently awarded a $1,500 scholarship prize to Clarkstown South High School student Alana Kurtti as the winner of this year's Italian-American State Legislators Scholarship Program. 

The New City native stood out from her fellow applicants, boasting an impressive resume that included a 4.56 Grade Point Average (GPA), including her participation in activities outside of the classroom.  She currently serves as Captain of her Varsity Softball Team, President of the Greenhouse Club, and volunteers her time spare time fundraising for Operation Smile and St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester) today visited the Hi-Tor Animal Care Center to provide a charitable contribution of over 100 items to pets in need, including toys, food, cleaning supplies, blankets, and more.  He was greeted by dedicated Hi-Tor staff personnel, enthusiastic animal lovers, and a plethora of cats and dogs awaiting their next loving, adopting owner.

Senator Carlucci and Westchester Community College Host Financial Aid Workshop for Students and Parents

OSSINING, NY – Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester) and Westchester Community College – SUNY (WCC) invite residents to an informative seminar to hear financial aid specialists discuss how families can plan and afford to pay for college.  The event will also feature experts from the WCC Office of Student Financial Assistance, which will be on hand to answer questions and assist parents and students navigate the maze of funding for higher education.

The event will be held this Thursday, June 6th from 7:00pm – 8:30pm at Westchester Community College Ossining Extension Center, located in the Arcadian Shopping Center, 22 Rockledge Avenue, Ossining.
