Thank You for a Successful Coat and Blanket Drive

I want to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to everyone who generously donated items during my recent coat and blanket drive to benefit the Center for New Americans. Through your kindness, we collected more than 50 large bags and boxes of items that will be distributed to local refugee families. Many refugees arrive in the United States with few possessions from climates that do not experience the kind of winters that we are accustomed to. Thanks to the generosity of the community, hundreds of families will be able to face our harsh weather with a basic necessity in Central New York—a winter coat.

THANKSGIVING ESSAYS AND CONTRIBUTIONS

Dear Participant,

Thank you for your wonderful contribution to the Thanksgiving Day Creative Celebration. We received outstanding poems, essays, and artwork that exemplify the creativity of New York State’s young people.

The submissions received are remarkable in what they represent – showing gratitude and respect for family, friends, our troops fighting overseas, and many other important subjects and activities. I am humbled and honored to see such inspiring contributions in response to what is a deceptively difficult question: “What are you thankful for?”

On behalf of the New York State Senate, I would like to offer my wholehearted congratulations to all of the participants in this year’s Thanksgiving Day Creative Celebration.

Sincerely,

Albany Times-Union Op-Ed: Pathway through state's current job crisis

New York is in the midst of a middle-skills job crisis.

When you look at help-wanted listings across our state, the positions being advertised are for computer network specialists, electricians, machinists, welders and high-tech manufacturing workers. We often hear from employers who say many job applicants for skilled labor or high-tech positions lack the necessary skills to do the job. Additionally, we have a significant number of students who do not finish school, or who graduate without the skills to do well in college or the job market.

Providing a Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway to high school graduation helps solve this problem, but time to act is ticking.
