The Caregiver Advise, Record, and Enable Act ensures hospital patients can designate a family caregiver and requires hospitals to offer that caregiver instruction and demonstrations of medical tasks they are being expected to provide for their loved ones at home, such as administering multiple medications, dressing wounds, and operating medical equipment.

By James T. Mulder on January 28, 2015 at 3:00 PM

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The March 27 deadline when nearly all drug prescriptions in New York state must be issued electronically would be delayed one year under proposed legislation co-sponsored by Sen. David Valesky, D-Oneida.

The electronic prescribing mandate is required by the state's I-STOP law enacted in 2012 to address the epidemic of prescription painkiller abuse and addiction in New York. E-prescribing is expected to eliminate the problem of forged, traded or stolen prescriptions.

The e-prescribing mandate applies to all prescriptions, even non narcotic drugs. The new rule covers all prescribers except veterinarians.

Thank You for a Successful Coat and Blanket Drive

I want to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to everyone who generously donated items during my recent coat and blanket drive to benefit the Center for New Americans. Through your kindness, we collected more than 50 large bags and boxes of items that will be distributed to local refugee families. Many refugees arrive in the United States with few possessions from climates that do not experience the kind of winters that we are accustomed to. Thanks to the generosity of the community, hundreds of families will be able to face our harsh weather with a basic necessity in Central New York—a winter coat.
