  • Senator Valesky Says "No" to Beverage Tax; Will Fight to Save Jobs

    SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- State Sen. David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) today led a rally of beverage industry workers against Governor Paterson’s proposed 50 percent tax on soda and other drinks.


    “This tax will eliminate jobs and increase costs for families on tight budgets,” Sen. Valesky said. “It is simply not the right approach for addressing our state’s budget problems.”


    Valesky’s comments came during a rally at the Coca Cola Bottling Co. Sales Center in Syracuse on Friday. Valesky told workers at the facility that he would do everything he could to save their jobs.

  • Year in Review: Landmark Legislation Passed in 2009

    The past year has been a tumultuous one for New York State. The national fiscal crisis yielded a very difficult budget and deficit reduction actions, and an ill-fated coup mired the Senate in gridlock that marked one of the lowest points in the chamber’s history. Despite these challenges, the 2009-2010 legislative session was extremely productive with the passage of several pieces of landmark legislation, several of which I was pleased to author, that will improve the lives of Upstate New Yorkers.

    Electric Car Plant May Open in Syracuse

    New York State appears to be close to securing one of the nation’s first assembly plants for electric cars.


    Reva, an electric car company based in Bangalore, India, plans to work with Bannon Automotive, a new electric car company in Freeport, N.Y., to assemble a three-door plug-in hatchback, the NXR, at a still-to-be-determined site near Syracuse.
