Sen. Valesky to Hold Free Senior Fair on Oct. 16

Senator Valesky is hosting a Senior Information Fair at the Kallet Civic Center in Oneida on Thursday, October 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Experts from local businesses, nonprofits and government agencies (listed below) will provide important information on health care, in-home services, health insurance, prescription assistance, housing, avoiding scams, and local services, as well as offer giveaways. All senior citizens in Sen. Valesky’s district are invited to attend this free event.

Kinney Drugs will offer flu shots (with insurance card and co-payment), along with blood pressure checks and other health screenings. Tim Horton’s will provide refreshments.

Senator Valesky Warns Public About Rebate Tax Scammers

SYRACUSE—State Senator David J. Valesky today warned the public about reports of scammers attempting to illegally obtain personal information under the guise of confirming their eligibility for a state tax rebate.

“We are aware that scammers are targeting Central New York,” Senator Valesky said. “I urge everyone to be vigilant, to make sure their family and friends are aware of the scam, and to report any incidents to the Attorney General.”

Valesky bill to cover equipment and supplies for ostomies signed into law

SYRACUSE—This week, Governor Cuomo signed into law S.7893, sponsored by Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) which requires every insurance policy to include equipment and supplies necessary for the treatment of ostomies.

An ostomy is a surgically created opening connecting an internal organ to the abdomen, caused by many different conditions, including cancer, bowel disease, birth defects and injury. Different kinds of ostomies are named for the organ involved, such as a colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy.

SENATOR VALESKY GRANT MAKES NEW, INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND POSSIBLE IN CICERO CENTRAL PARK

CICERO—Dozens of children made quick work of breaking in a brand new playground at Cicero Central Park on Sept. 23, thanks to a grant by State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida).

Valesky directed $100,000 in capital funds to the Town of Cicero to build an inclusive play area at Central Park. The Town tore up an old tennis court that was in disrepair and replaced it with brightly colored playground equipment suited for children of all ages and physical abilities, including slides, swings and a rock climbing wall.

“I was pleased to direct this grant to the town for the play area,” Senator Valesky said. “This project fills a need for Central Park and provides a safe and fun environment for kids.”

Senator Valesky Takes on Locavore Challenge

Syracuse, NY – State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) is taking part in the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York’s (NOFA-NY) Locavore Challenge, which it holds each September to inspire awareness and action in eating locally and organically through events and activities around the state and online.

“We are fortunate to live in an area with a strong agricultural base and where locally produced foods are so readily available,” Senator Valesky said. “I encourage everyone to take advantage of the abundance of produce at our farmers’ markets, to support restaurants that buy local food products and to take part in the Locavore Challenge themselves.”

SENATOR VALESKY ENCOURAGES LOCAL POLICE TO APPLY FOR FUNDS TO COMBAT HEROIN, BUY PROTECTIVE VESTS

SYRACUSE – Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) is urging law enforcement agencies to apply for state grants from the Community Overdose Prevention (COP) program and the inVEST Partnership, both administered by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). COP provides trainings and equipment in the fight against heroin through the use of nasally administered naloxone. The inVEST Partnership provides funding for the purchase of lifesaving protective vests.

Senate Passes Valesky Legislation to Create Career and Technical Education Diploma; Will Help Address Middle Skills Gap

ALBANY— The State Senate today passed landmark legislation sponsored by State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) that creates a new, specialized educational path to train students to fill the growing number of jobs in New York in manufacturing and high tech fields.

The legislation (S.5966) creates a Career and Technical Education (CTE) diploma to  provide an alternative pathway to a high school graduation that incorporates career-focused education classes and curriculum into school programs with the goal of producing more highly skilled workers for New York State's technical and manufacturing industries.

Senate Passes Valesky-Sponsored Legislation to Protect Seniors from Scams

ALBANY - The Senate passed legislation, sponsored by Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida), that will protect senior citizens from deception by professionals who use senior-specific designations. The bill requires anyone using such a designation to disclose its source in advertisements and to prospective clients.

In an effort to bring in clients who are seniors, professionals often pursue licensure, registration or some sort of independent designation that requires specialized training in senior issues. However, it is important that seniors are aware of the source of these designations so they can be sure any claim is legitimate.

SENATE PASSES VALESKY BILL TO COMBAT SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE AND OTHER WOMEN’S EQUALITY LEGISLATION

ALBANY—The State Senate today passed legislation sponsored by Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) that strengthens laws against sexual harassment. This bill enacts part of the New York Women’s Equality Agenda, helping to break down barriers that perpetuate discrimination and inequality based on gender.

The legislation (S5873) would ensure that all employees are protected from sexual harassment by applying existing protections to businesses of all sizes.

Senator Valesky Announces Construction Grant Awards to Libraries

SYRACUSE, NY – Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) announced that seven libraries in Madison and Onondaga counties have been awarded public library construction grant funds. The capital funds, provided for in the 2013 State Budget, will enable the libraries to start or complete various projects that will improve operations, safety and energy efficiency.

“Libraries across my district report increased patronage as services expand to include technology, community programs and community meeting spaces,” Senator Valesky said. “Building upgrades and repairs are an ongoing need, and I am pleased to have supported this grant funding to help these libraries continue to provide essential services in safe and efficient environments.”

Senate Passes Valesky-Sponsored Elder Financial Abuse Legislation

Legislation sponsored by Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) protecting seniors from financial abuse passed the Senate today.

Sen. Valesky, chair of the Senate Aging Committee, released a report on May 6 that shows financial abuse amongst New York's seniors to be more prevalent than initially thought, with much higher rates of undocumented incidents that actually exist. Data obtained by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services project a surge in the number of cases of financial abuse by the year 2030, with nearly 200,000 incidents predicted to occur.

SENATE PASSES VALESKY LEGISLATION TO INCREASE NUMBER OF LAND BANKS IN NYS

ALBANY--Yesterday, the State Senate passed legislation (S.6731) sponsored by Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) increasing the maximum number of land banks in the state to 20.

Land banks, entities that take control of problem properties and then redevelop or dispose of them in a manner consistent with the public’s interest, are a proven strategic tool for cities and counties where the number of vacant properties outpaces the private market’s ability to deal with them. Land banks are proving to be effective tools to reduce blight and advance community revitalization.

Senate Passes Valesky-Sponsored Legislation to Direct $10m in Supportive Housing Funds Upstate

ALBANY—The State Senate passed legislation (S.7305) sponsored by Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) that specifically directs funding to Upstate New York from the supportive housing development program.

Supportive housing models include inclusive design for those who may have physical impairments and often offer a variety of services including activities, transportation, an on-site service coordinator, amenities, meals and support for residents’ health-related services.

ALBANY, N.Y.--A package of bills co-sponsored by Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) that target heroin and opioid abuse prevention and treatment and that expand resources for law enforcement passed the New York State Senate today. The bipartisan Senate Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction, of which Senator Valesky is a member, formed in response to the statewide heroin epidemic and recommended action on these specific bills.

VALESKY, MINER, MAGNARELLI ANNOUNCE FUNDING TO REPAIR MEACHEM ICE RINK

Senator, Assemblyman Answer Mayor’s Call to Find $460,000 in State Capital Funding for New Ice Surface at Meachem Rink

SYRACUSE, N.Y. –State Senator David J. Valesky, Mayor Stephanie A. Miner, and Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli, standing in the center of the Meachem ice rink, announced $460,000 in state funding coming to the City of Syracuse to pay for a replacement of the existing rink with an ice mat. Senator Valesky secured $350,000. An additional $110,000 was received through Assemblyman Magnarelli. The Meachem ice rink closed earlier this year due to malfunctions in the ice cooling system, including pipe corrosion.
