VALESKY, GRIFFO ANNOUNCE FUNDING FOR BOYS’ AND GIRLS STATE

UTICA – State Sens. David J. Valesky and Joseph A. Griffo announced today that the state budget includes, for the first time, funding for American Legion Boys’ State and American Legion Auxiliary’s Empire Girls State.

Morrisville State College will receive $100,000 to defray the cost of hosting 1,100 rising seniors for Boys’ State, which will be held from June 27 to July 3. The College at Brockport will receive $50,000 to cover some costs related to hosting more than 360 rising seniors for Empire Girls State, which will be held June 30 to July 6.

Senator David J. Valesky joins Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) today announced that he has joined the Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction to examine the rise in use of heroin and other opioids in New York State and develop recommendations for treating and preventing addiction.

“These drugs are highly addictive and extremely dangerous, and the increase in use that we’re seeing is deeply troubling,” Senator Valesky said. “Action is needed, and through this task force, I am hopeful we can do our part from a legislative perspective.”

SENATOR VALESKY ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF SENIOR PRESCRIPTION DRUG PROGRAM IN FINAL NYS BUDGET

ALBANY, NY—State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida), Chair of the Senate Aging Committee, announced the state budget will expand the successful Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) Program to include more than 25,000 more seniors in New York State.

Prescription drug rates have increased twice the rate of inflation, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, disproportionately affecting senior citizens, many of whom live on fixed incomes.

"Prescription drugs are one of the most expensive components of health care for seniors," Senator Valesky said. "With the cost of prescription drugs increasing significantly, it is important to expand the EPIC program to provide a safety net for more older New Yorkers."

Senator Valesky’s Grow: Pride of New York legislation passes Senate

ALBANY, N.Y.—The State Senate unanimously passed legislation (S.5064) sponsored by Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) that will help consumers find garden centers, nurseries, Christmas tree farms and other horticulture dealers that sell New York state products. The Grow: Pride of New York program creates a designation for such businesses and allows them to use marketing materials that promote their locally sourced products.

Senator Valesky joins Manufacturers Alliance to release study

Syracuse, New York - Senator David Valesky (D-Oneida) joined local business leaders to announce the results of a new study released today, “Manufacturing Executives: Attitudes, Operations, Expectations & Opportunities,” which indicate that while the manufacturing sector stills finds the economic climate to be challenging, they continue to invest in capital and operations in New York State. The study is part of a continuation series that began in 2010, conducted by Zogby Analytics, and commissioned by a partnership between the Manufacturers Alliance of New York State, its policy and research arm the Manufacturers Research Institute of New York State, and the New York State Economic Development Council (NYSEDC).

State Senator David J. New York State Senate Inducts St. Marianne Cope into Historic Women of Distinction Exhibit

ALBANY--To celebrate Women’s History Month, the New York State Senate is hosting an exhibit honoring historic New York women whose achievements in arts, science, government, military, labor, education, and social reform have earned them recognition as Women of Distinction.

This exhibit inducts American Saint and health care pioneer St. Marianne Cope (1838-1918), of Syracuse and Utica. In 1869, she became one of the founders of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. She was a pioneering advocate for patients’ rights, sanitation, and hygiene, and believed that no distinction should be made for patients due to their religious beliefs, nationality, or color.

Senator Valesky, Assemblyman Brindisi Promote Legislation to Address Skills Gap Through New Career and Technical Education Diploma Pathway

ALBANY, NY—State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi (D-Utica) stood today with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to promote legislation they sponsor (S5966/A8189) creating a new specialized educational path to train students to fill the growing number of jobs in New York in manufacturing and high-tech fields.

The legislation creates a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) diploma to provide an alternative pathway to a high school graduation that incorporates career-focused education classes and curriculum into school programs with the goal of producing more highly skilled workers for New York State's technical and manufacturing industries.

Senator Valesky Named Chair of Senate Aging Committee

ALBANY, N.Y.—State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) was named Chairman of the Senate Aging Committee today, a post he previously held from 2011-12.

“I am pleased to resume chairmanship of the Aging Committee and look forward to taking the lead on policy issues that are important to seniors and their families,” Senator Valesky said. “With Baby Boomers entering retirement age, aging issues are among the state’s most important.”

New York State ranks third in the nation in the number of resident older adults. In 2010, there were approximately 3.7 million New Yorkers over the age of 60. That number is predicted to grow to 4.1 million by 2015 and 5.4 million in 2030—an increase of nearly 32 percent.

Senate Passes Bills to Help Flood Victims

UTICA – The New York State Senate has passed four bills aimed at improving response and providing relief to Mohawk Valley residents negatively impacted by flooding.

Senators who represent the Mohawk Valley – David Valesky, Joseph Griffo, and  James Seward – touted the bills at a news conference today at the State Office Building, Utica.

The package is:

S6345 (Valesky): Relates to creating the upstate flood mitigation task force within the Canal Corp.

S5931 (Seward): Enacts the “Mohawk Valley and Niagara County assessment relief act”

Report Identifies over 2,000 State Rules and Regulations that Warrant Reform or Review

SYRACUSE, N.Y.– State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) today joined colleagues in the Senate Majority Coalition to issue a comprehensive report shedding light on New York State’s notoriously dense regulatory structure and identifying 2,219 specific rules, regulations and practices that put New York’s businesses at a competitive disadvantage.

In Wake of 2013 Flood, Senator Valesky Co-Sponsors Bill to Create Disaster Fund

SYRACUSE—State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) has joined other state legislators who represent areas affected by severe flooding in July 2013 in introducing legislation that would create a state disaster recovery fund aimed at expediting assistance to victims and municipalities.
