Senator David J. Valesky Unveils IDC Affordable NY Plan

SYRACUSE–State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida), joined by several local advocates, introduced the Independent Democratic Conference’s 2014 legislative agenda, titled “Affordable NY.” The agenda, composed of five core policy items, demonstrates the IDC’s commitment to working families during the 2014 legislative session.

“The Affordable NY plan is a lifetime commitment to New York’s working families. It is critically important to address issues that affect all New Yorkers; challenges in paying for child care, affording college and living on a fixed income after retirement are topics I hear about from constituents every day,” Senator Valesky said.

Senator Valesky Drops Off Coats and Blankets for Newly Arrived Refugees

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) dropped off 12 bags of donated coats and blankets at the Center for New Americans on Monday, November 25. Senator Valesky had recently held a coat and blanket drive at the State Office Building in partnership with InterFaith Works’ Refugee Resettlement program.

In Wake of 2013 Flood, Senator Valesky Co-Sponsors Bill to Create Disaster Fund

SYRACUSE—State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) has joined other state legislators who represent areas affected by severe flooding in July 2013 in introducing legislation that would create a state disaster recovery fund aimed at expediting assistance to victims and municipalities.

“We have seen too many instances of flood victims lacking basic necessities months after a disaster hits because they are waiting for government to act,” Senator Valesky said. “That is unacceptable, and I am pleased to co-sponsor this legislation that will ensure expeditious distribution of aid and resources through a disaster recovery fund.”

NY Senate to Convene Cybersecurity Hearing in Rome

ROME -Six Senate committees will hold a joint hearing at noon on Monday, November 18, 2013 to hear testimony from experts in law enforcement, finance and computer science about the state’s preparedness against cyber-attacks.

“Cyber crime is a major economic issue, resulting in more than $500 million in losses last year alone,” said Sen. Joseph A. Griffo, who chairs the Senate Banking Committee and is hosting the event. “There’s a reason why England considers it an even greater threat than nuclear war. We need to take a closer look at what our state is doing to prevent cyberattacks that could affect our security, our economy and our government.”

Starting on Tuesday, October 1, individuals, families, and small businesses can purchase health insurance through New York State of Health, the official state health plan marketplace. State Program to Help Flood Victims

Yesterday, Governor Cuomo announced a $16 million Flood Recovery Program to assist homeowners, small businesses, and farms in areas hardest hit by recent flooding. Many people will not be able to return to their homes due to extensive damage, and others face substantial rebuilding costs that are not covered by insurance. Unfortunately, the financial and property loss from the floods is below the amount that triggers federal FEMA and other federal assistance.
