Budget Update From State Senator David J. Valesky

The New York State Legislature has completed passage of an on-time budget for the second year in a row. Though it was another challenging budget, requiring the closure of a $3.5 billion deficit, we were able to balance the budget without tax increases or fiscal gimmickry. In addition, overall spending was reduced for the second straight year, the frist time this has happened in at least three decades.

Statement from Senator David Valesky Regarding Constitutional Amendment, Statute to Create Independent Redistricting Commission

I was pleased to join Governor Cuomo in enacting long-needed reform to create a system of independent redistricting that would take drawing district lines out of legislators’ hands. The constitutional amendment and accompanying statute passed last night mirrors legislation I sponsor that would enact permanent structural reform of a broken, dysfunctional system, and create an independent commission to draw lines. From now on, an equally balanced commission will be in charge of the process, and it will have to adhere to guidelines with respect to population deviation, preservation of communities of interest and protection of minority voting rights.

Statement from Senator Valesky Regarding Syracuse Common Council Passage of Land Bank Legislation

I applaud the Common Council for moving legislation forward to create a city/county land bank. As the author of the state law, I am extremely encouraged that Onondaga County and the city of Syracuse will have the opportunity to be one of the first land banks in the state. Vacant and abandoned housing has been a problem in our communities for too long, and the application of this new strategy is a promising solution.

STATEMENT FROM SENATOR DAVID J. VALESKY ON GOVERNOR SIGNING MISSING VULNERABLE ADULT ALERT SYSTEM INTO LAW

I am very pleased that Governor Cuomo has signed this bill into law. It is a fact that the longer vulnerable adults are missing, the more likely they are to be injured or killed. This law, which many of us have worked on for years, will enable families and law enforcement to get the word out about missing people faster, and therefore increase the likelihood of finding them unharmed.

“As a father and a legislator, I am fully in support of legislation that protects children and punishes those who harm them. We’ve seen too many cases locally and nationally where egregious offenses have been committed against children with insufficient penalties.
