Senator David J. Valesky's Bill Expanding Individual Access to State Records Signed into Law

SYRACUSE, N.Y.— The Governor of New York today signed into law new legislation sponsored by State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) that will allow individuals to request record covered by the Personal Privacy Protection Law through electronic mail.  Until now, a written request had to be submitted by an individual to receive information the state may maintain about that person.

New York Senate Passes Good Government Legislation Sponsored by Senator David J. Valesky; Bill Prohibits State Agencies from Making Loans to Employees

SYRACUSE, N.Y.-- The New York State Senate passed legislation on May 12, sponsored by State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida), which would prohibit state agencies from making personal loans to employees.

The bill is the latest in a series of bills focused on good government and providing transparency and increased access to citizens.

Independent Democratic Conference Plan would save $37 million; Strengthen State IG Office

The Independent Democratic Conference today released a plan to streamline New York's patchwork Inspector General system and further empower the State Inspector General to be the top watchdog of New York's bureaucracy.

This proposal, which would eliminate overlapping and duplicative layers of state government and consolidate what are often competing operations, would result in $37 million in savings.

State Senators Valesky and Johnson Urge Comptroller to Pull State Pension Funds Over Libyan Terrorist Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y.--State Senators David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) and Craig M. Johnson (D-Nassau), incensed over the release and subsequent “hero’s welcome” received by the terrorist convicted of the Pam Am Flight 103 bombings, today sent a letter to NYS Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli urging him to divest state pension funds from any United Kingdom-based companies that conduct business with Libya.

This call for divestment comes as a result of information suggesting that Scotland's release of  Abdel Baset al-Megrahi was somehow influenced by the desire for United Kingdom-based companies to forge closer economic ties with the Libyan government.

State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida), a member of the Senate Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction today joined colleagues in releasing a report summarizing the findings of statewide forums held to examine the issues surrounding the increase in drug abuse, addiction and drug-related crimes in New York. The report includes a comprehensive package of bills recommended for action this legislative session that target prevention, treatment, and enforcement issues raised during extensive testimony provided by dozens of experts, parents, and concerned New Yorkers.
