Independent Democratic Conference Plan would save $37 million; Strengthen State IG Office

The Independent Democratic Conference today released a plan to streamline New York's patchwork Inspector General system and further empower the State Inspector General to be the top watchdog of New York's bureaucracy.

This proposal, which would eliminate overlapping and duplicative layers of state government and consolidate what are often competing operations, would result in $37 million in savings.

Budget Update From State Senator David J. Valesky

The New York State Legislature has completed passage of an on-time budget for the second year in a row. Though it was another challenging budget, requiring the closure of a $3.5 billion deficit, we were able to balance the budget without tax increases or fiscal gimmickry. In addition, overall spending was reduced for the second straight year, the frist time this has happened in at least three decades.

Cayuga County Legislature votes 10-2 to urge state to require welfare recipients to be residents

AUBURN | When it comes to welfare benefits, most local legislators believe state assistance should only be extended to residents.

On Tuesday evening, during the Cayuga County Legislature's full monthly meeting, legislators voted 10-2 to support a resolution urging New York to a establish a residency requirement for people seeking to obtain welfare benefits.

The resolution sparked debate among legislators — two of whom questioned the matter's underlying claims.

Senate Passes Valesky-Sponsored Legislation to Direct $10m in Supportive Housing Funds Upstate

ALBANY—The State Senate passed legislation (S.7305) sponsored by Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) that specifically directs funding to Upstate New York from the supportive housing development program.

Supportive housing models include inclusive design for those who may have physical impairments and often offer a variety of services including activities, transportation, an on-site service coordinator, amenities, meals and support for residents’ health-related services.
