Sound Investment: Governor should sign bill to help downtowns

Gov. David Paterson announced Wednesday that he had vetoed 14 bills that he said would have cost taxpayers a total of $5.7 million. "This is not a time to add to the state's spending or to increase the burden on the state's taxpayers," he said. "This is the time for fiscal responsibility, and that means vetoing bills that increase costs to taxpayers."

Sign the rehab bill

Now that the State Legislature once again passed a rehabilitation tax credit, Gov. David A. Paterson should sign that bill.

For the past few years, New York has had the opportunity to breathe life into urban neighborhoods and downtown cores, a chance to revitalize deteriorating housing and commercial property. The opportunity also offers the possibility of revitalizing historic structures.
