SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- State Sen. David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) today led a rally of beverage industry workers against Governor Paterson’s proposed 50 percent tax on soda and other drinks.

“This tax will eliminate jobs and increase costs for families on tight budgets,” Sen. Valesky said. “It is simply not the right approach for addressing our state’s budget problems.”

Valesky’s comments came during a rally at the Coca Cola Bottling Co. Sales Center in Syracuse on Friday. Valesky told workers at the facility that he would do everything he could to save their jobs.

Statement from Senator Valesky Regarding Governor's Ethics Bill Veto

I am deeply disappointed that the Governor chose to veto the ethics reform package. This legislation is a good first step in advancing substantial structural change in the way business is conducted in Albany, and will wipe out decades of ineffective ethics standards and enforcement.

The Senate will move to override this veto, and I implore my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to vote in favor of it, as they did with the original legislation.

Year in Review: Landmark Legislation Passed in 2009

The past year has been a tumultuous one for New York State. The national fiscal crisis yielded a very difficult budget and deficit reduction actions, and an ill-fated coup mired the Senate in gridlock that marked one of the lowest points in the chamber’s history.
