Dean G. Skelos' Press releases

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

By increasing spending with no way to pay for it, Democrats have created an unbalanced budget that includes no relief for property taxpayers and continues to cut the STAR property tax relief program by millions of dollars.

This budget does nothing to create jobs.  In fact, Democrats voted to eliminate half a billion dollars in job creation tax credits that will jeopardize thousands of jobs, especially upstate.

STATEMENT FROM SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

After all their talk about property tax relief, Senate Democrats cut the STAR program, rejected the property tax cap and ignored mandate relief.  With their actions today, they have broken their promise to the taxpayers and once again saddled them with spending they cannot afford.

With every passing day,  there are more signs that the Democrats plan on raising more taxes.  There was another private leaders meeting today that did not include myself or Assembly Republican leader Kolb. After the meeting, Governor Paterson confirmed that he, Speaker Silver and Senator Sampson discussed increasing sales taxes and other “revenue options,” which is just another way of saying more taxes. Taxpayers better watch their wallets.

As the Assembly debates the latest spending bills negotiated behind closed doors, the Democrats continue to make plans to raise taxes to pay for that spending.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

Since the Governor proposed his Executive Budget five months ago, Senate Republicans have consistently said that we will not support a budget that includes more taxes, fees and borrowing because we are listening to the people of this state who have simply had enough and don’t want to pay any more.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

The Democrats and Governor Paterson have been talking about shutting down government for the past week and appear to want that to happen.  They went behind closed doors, negotiated a budget extender in secret and now apparently, cannot produce the votes to pass it.

The Governor’s proposal to re-open state parks is a classic bait and switch scam that promises open parks and delivers a mess of millions of dollars in new taxes and fees on businesses and reduces environmental protection funds.  This disgraceful plan was negotiated in secret, in the middle of the night, by Speaker Silver and Senator Sampson.

We hope the reports are true that the Governor and Democrat leaders have reached an agreement to open the State Parks for the Memorial Day weekend, but the reality is Democrats never should have closed our parks in the first place.

Once again, Speaker Silver and his fellow Democrats are refusing to listen to New York taxpayers who have had enough of taxes and spending by planning a massive tax increase to pay for spending we cannot afford.  New Yorkers have made themselves very clear on the issue of tax hikes, yet the Democrats continue to display their arrogance by pushing for more tax increases.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

In his comments on a radio interview this morning, Governor Paterson clearly pointed out what has been apparent for many months, that Senate Democrats are the reason why the state budget is now 34 days late, with no agreement in sight.

Senator Kevin Parker’s latest comments this morning, calling members of the Senate “white supremacists,” are disturbing, disgraceful, disruptive and reprehensible and have no place in this government body or any other.

It’s clear that members of the Senate, on both sides of the aisle, are sick and tired of Senator Parker’s repeated angry, and sometimes violent, outbursts.

The legislation submitted by Governor Paterson to strengthen New York’s sex offender registry includes proposals that I sponsored and the Senate passed repeatedly, with Democrat support, since the original sex offender registry was created by Megan’s Law in 1995.

The proposals in the Governor’s legislation will give law enforcement the resources they need to track and properly punish sex offenders who violate the registry law, and provide the most up-to-date information needed to protect our families from dangerous criminals.
