Dean G. Skelos' Press releases

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

It is disappointing, but certainly not unexpected, that New York did not receive any money from the federal Race to the Top program.  New York’s application for up to $700 million in federal money was put at an extreme disadvantage earlier this month when Democrats in the Senate and Assembly refused to pass legislation to lift the cap on charter schools,

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

Last year, Senate Democrats arrogantly prepared a budget in complete secrecy, with no time for public review and scrutiny and little time for questions and debate.  This year, they did it again.

Their final budget resolution was given to us just hours ago and they intend to bring it up for a vote today.  It’s clear they do not want a thorough review of the plan because even a cursory review shows that their priorities are wrong, and their numbers don’t add up.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

With just two weeks until the April 1st budget deadline, Democrats in the Senate and Assembly have failed to make any progress toward a new budget.  Senate Democrats have talked about starting the conference committee process, but have done nothing.  Neither they, nor the Democrats in the Assembly, have produced any budget bills or resolutions for consideration.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

With one month left before the April 1st budget deadline, Governor

Paterson should call a five-way public leaders meeting to begin an open

process to get a budget done on time.

The state’s budget reform law* spells out an open, transparent and

inclusive budget process to achieve an on-time budget.  Today, Speaker

Silver and Senator Sampson are required to reach agreement with the

Governor on projected revenues, or the Comptroller determines a revenue

number.

Senator Dean Skelos gives the GOP response to Governor David Paterson's State of the State Address

Senator Dean Skelos: State of the State response 1/6/09

In his State of the State message Governor Paterson said that New York faces an enormous fiscal crisis.

He’s right.

New York, like other states, has been hit hard by the economic recession, forcing you and other families to make sacrifices in order to make ends meet.

Albany must now do the same.

Governor Paterson talked a lot about fiscal restraint, but we’ve heard that speech before.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

To put this deficit reduction plan in the right perspective you haveto look at why New York has a $3.2 billion deficit – because the Democratsin the Senate and Assembly, with Governor Paterson, put together a budgetthat increased spending by more than $12 billion.       They spent every dime of federal stimulus money when everyone knewthe economy was in trouble; then they raised taxes and fees and spent evenmore.       The taxpayers want spending cut and we are doing that today.<

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

I agree with Governor Paterson’s statement today that the Legislature should be acting on a deficit reduction plan today, instead of waiting until Monday.  The only problem is he has not submitted a bill we can act on, as Senate Republicans called on him to do Thursday.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

The taxpayers of New York delivered a strong message last Tuesday that they are sick and tired of out of control government spending and the high taxes and fees that pay for it.  Families have had to sacrifice and cut back, businesses have had to lay off employees, people across the state are struggling to make ends meet.     Unfortunately, by failing to cut government spending it is clear that Senate Democrats and other Democrat leaders haven’t gotten the message.
