SENATE PASSES MEASURES TO PREVENT DRUG USE IN NEW YORK COMMUNITIES

 

Bills Would Strengthen Penalties for Meth-Related Crimes and Prevent Use of Parks or Playgrounds for Drug Activity

The New York State Senate today passed two drug prevention bills to combat the spread of methamphetamine use in New York and to stop parks and playgrounds from being used by drug dealers.

Bill (S1150), sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), would deter the growing use of methamphetamine in New York by strengthening penalties for the sale and possession of meth and make them consistent with penalties for crimes involving heroin and cocaine. 

Senator Skelos said, “When illegal drugs take hold of a community, everyone suffers. The important measures passed by the Senate today would help curb drug abuse throughout the state by tackling the spread of methamphetamine use and help put a stop to dealers who use a park or playground setting to lure children to drugs.”

Annual Program Honors Women's Contributions to Our Community 

In honor of Women’s History Month, Senator Skelos today invited local residents to nominate friends, coworkers and neighborhood leaders whose outstanding work on behalf of our communities makes them deserving of special recognition by the State Senate as a New York "Woman of Distinction."

The Senate will honor distinguished woman from our area and throughout the state at an Albany reception to be held in May, where each honoree's photograph and biography will become part of a special exhibit proclaiming the special contributions of exemplary New York women.

SENATE COALITION ANNOUNCES PASSAGE OF BILLS TO CLOSE DANGEROUS LOOPHOLES IN SEX OFFENDER LAWS

Legislation Will Eliminate Gaps in Laws Created by a Recent State Court Ruling and Help Create Safer Communities

 

The New York State Senate today passed nine bills to close dangerous loopholes in the laws protecting children and communities from sexual predators. The measures would address critical issues raised by a recent Court of Appeals ruling that prevents local governments from enacting laws restricting sex offenders, as well as the safety concerns highlighted in a recent Senate Coalition joint investigation and report. In “Keeping Our Children Safe From Sex Offenders,” the Senate Coalition uncovered numerous instances of convicted pedophiles living within 1,000 feet of grade schools with pre-kindergarten programs or stand-alone Universal Pre-K programs.

Senate Passes Legislation Targeting Cyber Terrorism

The New York State Senate today passed four bills to crack down on cyber terrorism and its rapidly expanding threat to the state’s security and finances. The legislation, sponsored by Senator Thomas Croci (R, Sayville), would enact tougher penalties for cyber-related crimes, create cyber security programs to identify potential risks and threats, and require the state to perform a comprehensive review of all its cyber security measures every five years.

Legislation Focuses on Reducing Growth of Criminal Street Gangs and Protecting Citizens From Gang-Related Violence

The New York State Senate today passed legislation to reduce gang violence and protect communities throughout the state. The New York State Criminal Street Gang Act (S1701), sponsored by Senator Martin Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn), would prosecute and prevent criminal gang activity by creating tough new penalties for gang-related crimes, as well as develop gang prevention programs for schools, at-risk youth, and prison inmates.

SENATE PASSES PACKAGE OF BILLS TO TOUGHEN PENALTIES FOR SEX OFFENDERS

 

The New York State Senate Majority Coalition announced Monday the passage of a package of legislation that would help keep communities safer from sexual predators. The seven bills would help prevent the most dangerous offenders from having contact with children and college students, require more stringent residency reporting requirements for the sex offender registry, strengthen penalties for those who help sex offenders evade registration requirements, and create a public awareness program to educate schools, community groups, and clergy on issues related to sex offenders.  

Senate Majority Leader and Coalition Co-Leader Dean G. Skelos said, “We must continuously focus on ways to keep families safe from sex offenders. Providing the public with accurate residency information and limiting the potential for children, college students, and others to have close contact with sexual predators are important protections our communities need.”

SENATE PASSES EDUCATION INVESTMENT TAX CREDIT TO GIVE PARENTS MORE OPTIONS IN THEIR CHILD’S EDUCATION

Measure Provides New Tax Incentives to Offer Parents More Educational Choices

The New York State Senate today passed legislation that helps give parents more choice in the education of their child. The Education Investment Tax Credit (S1976), sponsored by Senators Martin Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) and Simcha Felder (D, Brooklyn), creates new tax incentives for contributing to a child’s education, encourages investment in schools, and provides parents with more options in finding educational opportunities.

Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos said, “The Education Investment Tax Credit would give new educational options to parents and help schools and students succeed. This measure will continue to be a priority of our conference during state budget negotiations.”

STATEMENT FROM SENATE MAJORITY LEADER DEAN SKELOS

Senate Republicans have a long history of fighting for property tax relief for hardworking homeowners and their families.  We created the original STAR school property tax relief program, led the fight for passage of the two-percent property tax cap, and initiated the STAR rebate check program, which was eliminated by Democrats in 2009.

While we look forward to discussing the specifics of Governor Cuomo's proposal when he unveils his entire Executive Budget, it is essential that any enacted property tax relief plan ensures all middle-income families in every region of the state receive property tax relief.
