SENATE PASSES JOB CREATION & TAXPAYER PROTECTION ACT

The New York State Senate today passed the Job Creation and Taxpayer Protection Act of 2011, a three-part plan to encourage the creation of new private sector jobs and ensure fiscal responsibility, including the enactment of a two percent state spending cap and requiring a two-thirds “super majority” vote to increase taxes.

“The people have spoken loud and clear that they want the state to cut spending, stop runaway tax increases and get off businesses’ backs and out of their wallets so they can create new jobs,” Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos said.  “Today, the Senate is sending a clear signal that we share those priorities by making these bills the first ones we act on in the 2011 session.

Help Make a Difference This Holiday Season

The Holiday's are a time for us to reflect and give thanks for what we have even during difficult times.  We can be thankful for good friendships, loving families, or even a single moment that may have benefited our lives or the lives of others.   With so much to be thankful for, we should not forget those who are less fortunate than us or who may have fallen on hard times. There are people within our community who are in need of help, especially during the holiday season, and together we can make a difference.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

In two years Senate Democrats increased state spending by $14 billion, passed two unbalanced budgets and drove up the state deficit, now they are leaving Albany without dealing with the fiscal mess they created.  This irresponsible lack of action will only push the state’s budget problems to another day and once again shows their disdain for taxpayers.

Governor Paterson called this special session first and foremost to deal with the budget deficit. Unfortunately, the Democrats chose to leave town without bringing any budget cuts to the floor for a vote.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

I am very proud to say that my colleagues in the Senate Republican conference have unanimously voted for me to be the Temporary President and Majority Leader of  the State Senate.

I appreciate their support and their trust. Our conference is unified and we are ready to move forward. The election is over and the people want us to get to work and govern.

The last two years the taxpayers in this state have been abused – and that has to stop. Everyone has to understand that we must put the taxpayer first.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

Senate Republicans share Governor-elect Cuomo’s serious concern that a needless, protracted delay in determining the results of three Senate elections would create gridlock in the Senate, that the ballots must be counted expeditiously and any legitimate legal issues must be resolved as soon as possible.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

New Yorkers are ready to move past Election Day.  They want us to govern and focus on their priorities.  According to a Siena College poll, the top priorities of New Yorkers are creating jobs, reducing state spending and taxes, and balancing the budget.  Senate Republicans are ready to get to work and get results on these issues.

This year Senate Republicans proposed a job creation plan that would provide a tax credit, which is similar to one enacted by the federal government, that would create thousands of jobs at no cost to the State, and help get people off unemployment.

The Inspector General’s report confirms what I said in February, that the initial award of the Aqueduct VLT contract to AEG reeked of favoritism and was a corrupt a backroom deal.  The disgraceful, criminal conduct of Senate Democrats exposed by the Inspector General makes it clear they were only looking after their own political best interests, not the public’s.

In February, I wrote a letter to Senator Sampson asking for a Senate hearing to examine all the Aqueduct bids in public to ensure an open, transparent process. Senator Sampson never wrote back.  Now I know why, because the fix was in and AEG’s winning bid was already wired, bought and paid for through contributions to the Senate Democrats.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

Today, Senate Democrats finished voting on a budget that raises taxes by nearly $4 billion when fully implemented, including approval of new income taxes, business taxes and reinstatement of the sales tax on clothing.   It continues a disturbing trend that began when Democrats took control of the Senate last year and raised taxes by more than $10 billion, including elimination of the STAR rebate check and enactment of the MTA payroll tax.

Over the last two years, Democrats have raised taxes on the average New York family by $5500.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

The whole budget process has been a failure of leadership by the Governor, Senator Sampson and Speaker Silver.  They had no problem passing bills to increase spending, but now they are going home without passing a bill to pay for it.  This is Democrat-controlled government at its worst. This disastrous budget was negotiated by the Democrats behind closed doors, they refused to negotiate in public or in a bipartisan manner, they passed it in piecemeal fashion and now they are leaving without finishing the job.

STATEMENT FROM SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

After all their talk about property tax relief, Senate Democrats cut the STAR program, rejected the property tax cap and ignored mandate relief.  With their actions today, they have broken their promise to the taxpayers and once again saddled them with spending they cannot afford.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

Since the Governor proposed his Executive Budget five months ago, Senate Republicans have consistently said that we will not support a budget that includes more taxes, fees and borrowing because we are listening to the people of this state who have simply had enough and don’t want to pay any more.
