STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

I am very proud to say that my colleagues in the Senate Republican conference have unanimously voted for me to be the Temporary President and Majority Leader of  the State Senate.

I appreciate their support and their trust. Our conference is unified and we are ready to move forward. The election is over and the people want us to get to work and govern.

The last two years the taxpayers in this state have been abused – and that has to stop. Everyone has to understand that we must put the taxpayer first.

Senate Republicans share Governor-elect Cuomo’s serious concern that a needless, protracted delay in determining the results of three Senate elections would create gridlock in the Senate, that the ballots must be counted expeditiously and any legitimate legal issues must be resolved as soon as possible.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

New Yorkers are ready to move past Election Day.  They want us to govern and focus on their priorities.  According to a Siena College poll, the top priorities of New Yorkers are creating jobs, reducing state spending and taxes, and balancing the budget.  Senate Republicans are ready to get to work and get results on these issues.

This year Senate Republicans proposed a job creation plan that would provide a tax credit, which is similar to one enacted by the federal government, that would create thousands of jobs at no cost to the State, and help get people off unemployment.

The Inspector General’s report confirms what I said in February, that the initial award of the Aqueduct VLT contract to AEG reeked of favoritism and was a corrupt a backroom deal.  The disgraceful, criminal conduct of Senate Democrats exposed by the Inspector General makes it clear they were only looking after their own political best interests, not the public’s.

In February, I wrote a letter to Senator Sampson asking for a Senate hearing to examine all the Aqueduct bids in public to ensure an open, transparent process. Senator Sampson never wrote back.  Now I know why, because the fix was in and AEG’s winning bid was already wired, bought and paid for through contributions to the Senate Democrats.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

Today, Senate Democrats finished voting on a budget that raises taxes by nearly $4 billion when fully implemented, including approval of new income taxes, business taxes and reinstatement of the sales tax on clothing.   It continues a disturbing trend that began when Democrats took control of the Senate last year and raised taxes by more than $10 billion, including elimination of the STAR rebate check and enactment of the MTA payroll tax.

Over the last two years, Democrats have raised taxes on the average New York family by $5500.

The whole budget process has been a failure of leadership by the Governor, Senator Sampson and Speaker Silver.  They had no problem passing bills to increase spending, but now they are going home without passing a bill to pay for it.  This is Democrat-controlled government at its worst. This disastrous budget was negotiated by the Democrats behind closed doors, they refused to negotiate in public or in a bipartisan manner, they passed it in piecemeal fashion and now they are leaving without finishing the job.

After all their talk about property tax relief, Senate Democrats cut the STAR program, rejected the property tax cap and ignored mandate relief.  With their actions today, they have broken their promise to the taxpayers and once again saddled them with spending they cannot afford.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

Since the Governor proposed his Executive Budget five months ago, Senate Republicans have consistently said that we will not support a budget that includes more taxes, fees and borrowing because we are listening to the people of this state who have simply had enough and don’t want to pay any more.

The legislation submitted by Governor Paterson to strengthen New York’s sex offender registry includes proposals that I sponsored and the Senate passed repeatedly, with Democrat support, since the original sex offender registry was created by Megan’s Law in 1995.

The proposals in the Governor’s legislation will give law enforcement the resources they need to track and properly punish sex offenders who violate the registry law, and provide the most up-to-date information needed to protect our families from dangerous criminals.

Democrats in Albany are getting ready to once again sock New York taxpayers with more than $8.2 billion in tax increases on individuals, families, businesses and consumers. The tax hikes are being brought to you by the same groups that successfully fought for $8.5 billion in tax increases last year to pay for more government spending.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS ON THE LATE STATE BUDGET

Rather than work around the clock to get a budget done on time, Democrats in the Senate and Assembly waved the white flag and simply gave up.  By doing so, Democrats sent a clear message to taxpayers that they aren’t willing to stay in Albany until the last moment to get a responsible budget done on time.  Their failure to get a budget done on time, and worse, to not even try, is inexcusable.

It is disappointing, but certainly not unexpected, that New York did not receive any money from the federal Race to the Top program.  New York’s application for up to $700 million in federal money was put at an extreme disadvantage earlier this month when Democrats in the Senate and Assembly refused to pass legislation to lift the cap on charter schools,

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

Last year, Senate Democrats arrogantly prepared a budget in complete secrecy, with no time for public review and scrutiny and little time for questions and debate.  This year, they did it again.

Their final budget resolution was given to us just hours ago and they intend to bring it up for a vote today.  It’s clear they do not want a thorough review of the plan because even a cursory review shows that their priorities are wrong, and their numbers don’t add up.
